Overall a great DVR. I am using it for a non-traditional purpose: recording quadcopter races. I am able to connect up to 8 wireless video receivers to it (I use the RC832) and record simultaneously. I got it up and running in no time, and didn't even need to read a manual (which is good, because I don't think it came with one).
My only gripe is that I have to enter my password so many times, which is a pain using the remote. I'm hoping there is an option to disable the password. But it does make sense that there wouldn't be, since this is intended to be used as a security recorder.
Getting footage off the DVR is also pretty easy, but it wasn't overly intuitive. I had to google it and found info on the Night Owl web site, which had the info I needed in the FAQ section. It allows you to do a "backup" to a USB stick, which is quite fast. You pick the day/time frame that you want. It allows you to export AVI, MP4, or H.264. I was recording for a few hours and it exported about 144 files, about half of which were black (no signal) and the other half had video content. The 144 files took up about 2GB on my USB stick.
So far I've used MP4 and it imported into my video editing software really well. The resolution the video records in is 720p, and is wide screen. Since I am using analog cameras, I am wondering if there is a 4:3 recording option... One of these days I'll download and read the manual.
I needed to replace my Nite Owl DVR becasue it used the "Lite" app and they apparently no longer supported that, and iOS would no longer support it either. Since I was upgrading, I decided to go with the 8 camera set up and expand my system. I installed a 2TB HDD. Set up is pretty much a breeze (just like the 4 camera system, with 8 inputs) I turned the DVR on and the video was on immediately. The wizard got me through the set up on my iPhone easily using NiteOwl HD for business. At this point, I was pretty thrilled. Then I tried to get CMS working on my Mac. Nope. Didn't work. Tried it on the PC, no. Sorry. Then 5 hours into operation, the four added camera drops just stopped working. I'm hoping the power supply died. That's a relatively easy fix. If not... I don't know. Maybe it shorted out the four cameras... It was almost so easy. Almost.
This Night Owl 8 Channel DVR is working fine. I am able to view the cameras on a monitor and my LED TV. My only disappointment is not being able to view the cameras on my computer. I installed the application from the included CD and followed the on screen instructions but the cameras could not be viewed in the window. I installed the application on my mobile phone and I am pleased to report that viewing of the cameras was immediate. Being able to monitor my home while I'm away is just great. 4 stars. If the app had worked on the computer I would have given 5 stars.
Nice product , and finally an honest advertisement, it came with the internal Hard drive , buyers beware the other company don't come with the internal hard drive, it is sold separately. Setup was a breeze and customer support excellent fast and to the point . Will buy again and again!!!!
Based on price and the very friendly software is a great product but I have experienced some incompatibilities. I have not figure out why my Uniden 1080P 2MP surveillance cameras did not work with this DVR so I have to use my old 700TVL from my first system which work fairly well. I am wondering if anybody else experienced this and I hope I will not need to spend more money on 1080P cameras to fix this issue. So far I am happy with the purchase in terms of product quality and very easy on the settings configuration.

I purchased this system to replace my older unit by the same company. The video is much sharper and the ability to view live and recorded information from my phone, iPad or laptop was a requirement. The setup was not as easy as they made it seem but was doable, which is one reason I gave a 4 star rating. 1080p or 4K would make it better but the price is great for additional home security.
The item pictured is not what I received. However, it did exactly what I needed it to do. I removed the old one and plug in all the cables in to the new one. It works just at good! No te technical support needed.
I had a older Night owl camera system. It was simple to swap wires to the new DVR. No port forwarding required. Put program in your phone and snap a pictore of the scan on the dvr and its good to go. Much easier. Picture is much clearer on the HD.
Good deal for the price. Works good. The only problem is compatibility with other Night Owl PC software. It works fine with phone and tablet Apps.
Great product, replaced our previous system that wore out, easy to set up and would recommend. Used it with existing cameras just fine.
