I love music, i record, play and listen incessantly, so when looking for a quality, rugged, portable Bluetooth player i had to try a few out based on the best reviews... UE Boom @ 179.99... Big Turtle Shell @ 162.99.... Photive Hydra @ 39.99

Sound Quality Comparison... UE Boom = 10...Big Turtle Shell = 9.... Photive Hydra = 7
The BTS had the softest Bass out of all these, but much clearer than the Hydra. UE Boom is the loudest and best by far, absolutely head turning sound.

Construction Quality... UE Boom = 7... Big Turtle SHell = 10.... Photive Hydra = 9
Pretty clear difference. I don't recommend it, but you could probably play frisbee in a pool or trampoline in the rain with the BTS. I'd be extremely afraid of getting the UE Boom wet, there's components built right onto the back of the + - buttons which would easily corrode if exposed... Photive looks like a mini tank, i trust it's build.

Size comparison, the UE Boom is the smallest out of these so the sound is even more impressive.

If you travel and want to play music outside while charging your phone as well ALL night long, buy the BTS...
if you want to jam music with you're friends on a hike with a waterproof back pack for only a FEW hours, buy the UE Boom.
If you're broke and don't care as much about sound quality as ruggedness, buy the Photive. I bought two of them at the great price of 39.99 (well worth it) for gifts and I know they'll love them.

The first BTS i received came with a faulty charger... Amazon shipped me a new BTS within 2 days. I contacted outdoor tech as well and they had me a new charger in the same amount of time... so now i have 2 chargers with my BTS!

Outdoor Tech is a fantastic, young company that i would love to invest in. They have some brilliant ideas and i'm sure their quality will only grow by the month...

this? ..... This? ..... THIS?! is AWESOME POSSUM. Not even a joking. I've written a review for this product about a year or two ago, and I would like to update and inform anyone else of this product. Here it goes!
These things are tougher than nails, I've dropped it accidentally and dinged the metal interior of my car. (Pic to prove it.) The device did not stutter, break, or as a matter of a fact, was not damaged at all.
With the AVI cable, you can connect this thing to just about any device. Wanna hear your record player be played at unheard of volume? Okay, sure.
Wanna dent your car with something built stronger than metal? Okay, once more, sure.
Wanna connect via blue tooth, charging your phone as it plays music while your talking to your friends about non sense? Okie dokie, its fine.
wanna jam out to some music while hiking using blue tooth and wireless support? DEAL. SOLD.
What I'm trying to get across is that this thing is stronger than a car door, has more battery juice than your grandma's liquor, AND can be used in emergency situations. I call mine Lassie, because she tells me when she's high, and when she's low, and knows when the fun is about to stop. I'll probably keep mine for the years to come. Photos included.
Disclaimer: This will not turn you into a teenage mutant ninja turtle, but pretty close.

I bought these speakers exactly a year ago, and I have been loving this speaker to a point where I considered giving it a name. It plays loud as promised, the sound quality is excellent, the battery life is way beyond what I even expected! And not to mention it looks sexy as hell.

I don't have an AUX-port for my car, so the speakers became my improvised AUX port. My friends even started making jokes with me, because I brought it literally everywhere. Unfortunately, I brought it to a beach, and wanted to wash some sand off of it in saltwater. As the idiot that I am, I didn't know saltwater is always bad for electronic devices, waterproof of not, and the speakers starting acting up.

I contacted their support and they were really fast to reply and friendly. All I asked for was a spare part, but as awesome as this company is they offered me a replacement Big Turtle Shell!

Seriously, I can't recommend this speaker enough and a lot of love goes out to Outdoor Technology aswell!

Firstly, let me say that I really like this speaker. We have used it a good bit since we got it just three months ago and I have been impressed with the celerity of the sound and the duration of the battery. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I purchased this based on the fact that it stated it was "Ultra Loud" and we use this at the beach. In a quiet enclosed room it is plenty loud, but outdoors (especially at the beach) it is only slightly louder than the JamBox or JBL units I tried before. All in all this is a good BT speaker and it is louder than most, but if you are expecting to anger your neighbors with this, it aint gonna happen.

I did a LOT of research and trying out bluetooth speakers before buying this one. I wanted a good amount of bass but portable. I originally bought this to attach to my motorcycle and use by the pool. I couldn't be happier with this speaker. It is a great size. Has two handles so it can be attached to stuff easily. It sounds PHENOMENAL!!! When I show people they are amazed at the sound, loudness and bass it puts out. I have gotten it wet numerous times when using it by the pool and still works perfectly. If you want a speaker that is super loud and has great bass this is the speaker for you!

Description

Your idea of what a boombox can be just got blasted. Those crazy bastards at Outdoor Tech have created a new portable rugged, water resistant Bluetooth speaker called the Big Turtle Shell with huge sound unlike any other. Its massive sound can fill any room, or outside space while doubling as a power bank for your other devices. The Big Turtle Shell Bluetooth speaker gives you the best wireless audio experience in any setting; from the beach to the pool party, the campfire to the backyard BBQ. The Big Turtle Shell can handle it all with style and ease.

This thing is great! I have had it over a year and there are too many positives to list but I'll try:
1) It gets loud! This is at least as loud as your average speaker and if you position it correctly it will blast tunes in multiple directions at once.
2) It is waterproof. I use this on the beach all the time (avid Volleyball player) and I no longer have to worry about covering everything when it starts to rain (ahem, I'm looking at you Gen 1 Bose that this replaced). This also came in handy when someone's dog decided to urinate on it for whatever reason. Instead of being completely pissed-off (sorry, I had to) that they ruined my speaker....I hosed it off after the game and we all continued on our merry way.
3) The battery is a beast. This thing plays and plays forever. In reality it's probably 10+ hours depending on how high you have it cranked but I usually don't charge it for a month and that is using it at least 4 hours per week at fairly high volume. Contrast this with my previous Bose that I had to charge at least once a week. This is a monstrous change and what prompted me to get the BTS in the first place.
4) Ability to charge cell phone. Many speakers now do this but it's handy in a pinch nonetheless.
5) Bluetooth/NFC. The bluetooth is surprisingly long range. I walked away with my phone one time to text someone, forgot that music was playing for everyone else playing a game, came back with my phone and then realized what I had done. I had basically walked 3/4 of the gymnasium away from the BTS and apparently it didn't care. NFC makes initial phone pairing really easy and is fun at parties so people can just walk up and be the interim DJ. Now that iPhones finally have NFC (yes, that was a dig), they too can enjoy eased pairing with the BTS.
6) This thing is rugged. I take pretty good care of my stuff so I can't say my BTS has ever taken a real fall (knocks on wood) but the thing gets gently tossed everywhere and rides around in my backpack weekly and so far so good. There are some scratches but it has been a trooper for the past year plus.
I'm sure there are more positives but you shouldn't need any. I had a Gen 1 Bose, tested a UE Boom, and briefly owned a Jawbone Big Jambox (which was pretty awesome but I gave it away because the BTS was better for me) before settling on keeping the BTS as my weekly vball partner. IMO this is the perfect outside bluetooth speaker companion if you need loud, long-playing, and rugged. At the current under 200 USD purchase price I am seeing on Amazon this is a steal. Do not hesitate to pick one up, the BTS will not disappoint!

Great speaker for out door use, the bass is a little lacking especially for songs that hit hard and low. The battery life is Incredible lasting up to three days with a lot of use both Bluetooth and 3.5mm plug but I haven't used it to charge any devices using the USB port. The audio pass through feature is a neat trick for upping the output using addition speakers. The carrying handles/sub ports are not big enough to loop your fingers through just the tip haha. I really like the rugged design it has a rubberized matte finish which feels durable but collects a lot of dust, on the upside it does not show scratches as much as a metallic or gloss finish. And the charging indicator LED is either flashing or solid red light for charging or fully charged respectively, so it's hard to tell the exact charge unless it's connected to Bluetooth.

Pros:
Dual Bluetooth pairing.
Excellent battery life.
Good audio quality.
Can be stood on its side for directional sound.

Cons:
Bass does not hit as low as expected for its size.
Collects a lot of dust on the rubberized finish.
Bass is underneath so if you place it on the grass or padded surface it is slightly muffled.

Love this product! We purchased the smaller turtle shell 3 years ago (haven't had one problem at all with it) but now have a pool and spend quite a bit of time outdoors in a noisy environment and wanted something bigger. The smaller one still works great but the big turtle shell is prefect. No worries about being next to a pool with kids and dogs running around. The sound is prefect without being overly loud. We kept it a bit quiet and still can hear the notes smoothly. Battery lasts forever! This is a great product. If I had to be super picky the only thing to be aware of is you must close the flap to over the jacks because that helps seal the subwoofer's sound. But really you should close that just to keep that area safe.

Just. Wow. Seriously, this thing is a beast. It's super loud, looks cool, and is very well designed.

I bought one a few weeks ago, and had a chance to try it out in a number of environments. First, I took it to a backyard cookout. I put it in a gazebo in the middle of the yard (it's a sizable backyard) and was able to hear it very well from pretty much any spot in the yard (and it wasn't even turned up all the way). Then I was able to take it out on the boat and beach. Of course, when the boat was hauling ass, the motor did drown out the speaker sound, but we also had it tied to the side of the captains seat, so it wasn't exactly placed for success there. However, I was impressed when we anchored the boat off shore (about 40 ft away) and turned up the speaker all the way, we could still hear it back on shore. I guess the water helped a bit, but they advertise 30 something feet so I think it performed very well in this case.

When I was reading reviews, some people complained about the sound quality, so I wasn't sure what to expect. After hearing it I realized that their concerns were unwarranted...the sound is great! I guess I'm not an audiophile, and it's a little light on bass, but I'm thinking they must be judging it against Bose or Beats or something. All in all, the bass still punches sufficiently (it's seems cleverly designed to create a bass chamber on whatever it sits on).

The thing is waterproof and rugged, wireless (of course you CAN plug in audio sources), and the battery does last a long time.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to finish testing the battery life, because I left it on the beach like a tard (YOUR WELCOME, STRANGER), but I had already been playing it loud for many, many hours.

So, as a final testament of my enthusiasm and how much I love this speaker, I just bought another one! It's going to be perfect for our upcoming river float trip.

I love, love this thing!!
I researched several; bought this for boating rather than try to retro-fit & install a stereo system. It is/was the loudest at the time. Bought my boyfriend a red one. Had them 3 years now. Love the handles on both ends--loop a bungee thru and hang it anywhere, even around my waist. No issue w battery.
Only drawback I've seen is the rubber caps for the ports on each end broke/tore off mine. Maybe they've corrected yhis issue in 3 years? I used some special 'locktite' plastics glue, and recycled a rubber goggles strap to glue the parts back.
Maybe that is a plastic they would consider because goggles in and out of chlorine in salt water sure last a long time, & have a little more flexibility.
