Nix Pro Color Sensor

Nix Pro Color Sensor

Nix Pro Color Sensor

I just opened the package and in my initial usage I am very impressed. I'm not a professional of any kind that would really put the Nix through its paces, I got the Nix just because I would like accurate scans of the color of the walls of my house in order to match the paint.  So far my Nix has done a very very good job. I still have not tried to mix paint with its results but as soon as I do I will let you know how accurate it reproduced the colors I'm trying to match.

I know that the Nix device is very simple and I'm sure they went to very great lengths to keep it simple but a little documentation would have been nice even if it was just to tell you to go online. I know I know those instructions were on the outside of the box but still it's a little disturbing to get a brand new device and have absolutely nothing to tell you anything about it. Even if it's just the history on how it was developed or how to use the software would have been a nice touch. Oh and by the way I know it's self-evident but letting us know that it has no on button would have been nice. It took me a few seconds of searching to realize this.

I had trouble getting it to pair with my phone. I have a Galaxy Note 4 with the latest software updates. Bluetooth reception is very weak, the Nix has to be within 1 foot of my phone in order for it to sync up with it. Even when the Nix is right next to my phone  the Bluetooth reception is only half  of the five bars possible. It also has to be very close in order to receive the scanned information a little farther than the 1 foot for sincing but not more than a foot or 2. SO to make a complicated sentence a little easier to understand if the synced Nix is more than 3 feet away from my phone the Bluetooth signal drops off and it won't send the scanned data and I get a "Nix has been safely disconnected" message.

The flat USB cable was a very nice touch even if it didn't come with its own charger, also very disturbing. Again I know USB chargers are all over the place but then again I'm just saying, you pay $350 plus for something rechargeable, it would be nice if it came with a charger. Here is where a little documentation would have been helpful you could have told us that it doesn't matter what voltage the charger is you can plug them into it as long it's a USB charger. Now I'm assuming that's so but I don't know that it's safe hence the nicety of some documentation.

I did not receive my Nix for this review. I found out about Nix during my research for paint scanners and decided to try it. I know what you're thinking, its ridiculous to spend 350+ bucks on something just to scan a few walls but what the heck I can aford it and I hate mismatched paint.

If you paint or have anything to do with doing paint touch ups for building maintenance, YOU NEED THIS!! This does what any of the major brand paint shops do with a sample...press it against the surface you want to match and hit the scan button on your phone and it will match to Behr, Sherman Williams, Benjamin Moore, Glidden....etc. I use this thing all the time and its paid for itself 5x over by now by saving me the trip to the store and the hassle of pulling something off the house to have the store match!!!

Plain and simple, if you paint, you NEED this!

Accuracy and correlation tested with macbeth chart and X-Rite spectroreflectometer.
Very accurate inside sRGB gamut, could be improved a bit in very blue colors.
But it's acceptable for this price and such small trichrometer sensor.
Lovely product. Looking for next product already!

Great product. Easy to use and the menu makes sense. A nice feature is that the dE is given for the color library selections that match the scan. Would like to see Dunn Edwards paint included in the color library. Marked down 1 star for 2 reasons. First, because the manufacturer could not or would not give me the inherent accuracy of the NIX Pro, i.e., the error introduced into the color space value by the NIX hardware sensor. No sensor is perfect. Second, the NIX does a poor job on many neutral gray colors Most of the time it matches to tan/beige colors not gray colors. With that said, the NIX Pro still does a better job than less expensive colorimeters and is well worth the money!

Pretty accurate, definitely helps with graphic design jobs

Description

Here at Nix Sensor Ltd., we've developed a tool that measures color more accurately and conveniently than ever before. The Nix Pro Color Sensor is a handheld device that can measure the color of any surface and provide the exact digital color information, sent right to your smartphone or tablet. The device offers industry-grade color accuracy without the frustration of using a fan deck or swatch book. Get objective measurement the first time and match to more than 10,000 colors in our iOS and Android app library. The Nix Pro is the perfect tool for designers and color professionals.

We use this all the time in my graphics printshop. It does what it says. Almost perfect color call outs to any item you choose. Will indicate the Pantone, CMYK, or hex. Very accurate and even more brilliant is that it's portable and app based

I got this sensor for work to verify color on consumer products. I didn't need the most accurate piece of equipment, but I did need something portable (particularly handy if you travel a lot) and that could give me my RGB readings. The Nix certainly does this.

The Nix was easy to setup. Download the app for apple or android, start up bluetooth, and connect. I found the Nix both on my Iphone (10.0.2) and on my Android (6.0.1) and connected with no issues. App is simple to navigate and use. Outputs are: RGB, CMYK, HEX, CIELAB, XYZ. You can easily compare readings just by selecting your base reading and then either can or pick another saved reading. This makes comparisons quick and easy, especially if you have a large sample size to check.

The only thing I wish the Nix had was a sturdy case. It comes with a microfiber bag, which is good against dust, but doesn't really protect the Nix from drops, bumps, etc. It would have been nice if the packaging could have doubled up as a carrying case. I will probably just buy a shell case for $10, but this is certainly not a show stopper.

Prior to the Nix, I was using a Konica Minolta CM-2600d. Although this could take the color readings I needed, it was considerably larger and tougher to use on smaller or curved surfaces. Using the calibration plate as the base, the Nix performs at a similar level compared to the Konica. It is about 1/4 the size and is easier to use on curved surfaces .

If you are looking for a colormeter that is inexpensive, portable and has reasonable accuracy, you should certainly give the Nix a try.

Most excellent, and you can save the results easily & quickly on your cell phone, iPhone or Droid. Forget the color wheel, get DIRECT color RGB & CMYK numbers, save and name color swatches.

I am a Marketing Director and ordered this to match colors for web and print. I was extremely impressed with the accuracy!

The color sensor works exactly as expected, and the App for the smartphone is a pleasure to use. I got it as a gift, and after the quick and easy setup with the app, we were good to go. Even the batter runtime is longer than i would have guessed.
All in all, a very nice piece of tech.
