After many years of faithful service, my previous 8-bottle thermoelectric wine cooler died when our power went off and on repeatedly over the course of a few seconds. I suspect the power supply was damaged by the stress and could have been repaired, but like most electronics these days, it's cheaper to replace than repair.
While I considered replacing the old unit with the same or a similar unit (which had a front panel temperature display and touch-panel controls), it occurred to me I had a constant complaint about that type of unit: every time the power went out, no matter how briefly, it would reset the temperature to the factory default and turn off the interior light. Sometimes I wouldn't know that happened until I would get out a bottle of wine which wasn't as chilled as I like it.
I decided to look for a unit which would permanently save the user settings and restore them at power-up. Amazingly, I could find only a handful of units which did that, and they were all much larger than an 8-bottle cooler. Haven't these engineers ever heard of Flash memory?
I then came across this unit with a mechanical dial for setting the temperature and a mechanical on-off switch for the light--no memory necessary.
So far it's working well. I do miss the usefulness of a temperature display, as the actual interior temperature of a thermoelectric cooler is dependent on the surrounding exterior temperature (and it does make the front look...uhm...cool). I don't understand why they couldn't have built one in--the display doesn't care what kind of controls are on the unit. Came on time and in good shape. I let it sit in the correct position for 48 hours before i plugged it in to make sure all internal fluids had gone to the right position. Set it up in desired location and plugged in. Set thermostat to desired level and within 3 hours the bottles inside were cool. Well satisfied. Would recommend and worth the money spent.

It's a very nice, small wine cooler. It's pretty quiet and keeps the wine at a good temperature.
