I bought this bundle for my 9-year-old son who is an avid reader. This kindle does not have a light like the Paperwhite, but that is fine for a 9-year-old child who can see just fine. It is not too dark for him to read. If he wants to read in bed at night, he uses a small book light. I bought myself the Kindle Paperwhite because I now use reading glasses and need more light to read. I also do a lot of reading before bed in my low lit bedroom. Otherwise, I would have bought this bundle for myself too. I did add the Kindle Free Time reading setting for my son because he likes to keep track of how much he is reading each day. His teacher requires him to turn in a reading log weekly. With the app this just makes it so much easier because it automatically does it. Once he outgrows the "Free time" it can be turned off. The content in the kids free time store is not that important to us since we borrow a lot of e-books from the library. I think in previous generations when the "free time" app was turned on, you could not borrow books from the library. That is not the case now. We have no problem downloading books from the library. I will say it takes a few steps to accomplish this. I have to search the library on my laptop first. Check the e-book out from the library. Have the book sent to my Amazon account. Then go to Amazon and tell it which kindle to send the e-book to. Once it arrives in the right kindle, you need to download it onto the kindle. More steps than I would like, but not enough that it keeps me from borrowing books. Overall, this has been a great buy for us. My son takes his kindle everywhere. If you think you need some lighting to see better, go with the Kindle Paperwhite. Otherwise, this one is just fine.
I bought this for myself as my first kindle! This is the best deal you can get on a kindle, especially with the $30 off if you're a prime member. This is the original kindle that is $80 that comes with a case, no ads, and a protection plan. The case is magnetic, not the greatest quality, but it will do perfect for me for a year or so. I connected easily to my library account and to my other books already downloaded on my kindle app. It automatically connected to my amazon prime account. I love it! This deal will not disappoint!
We bought this as an 8th birthday gift for our voracious reader son - nearly a year ago now. We use it both to purchase the next book in whatever series he is currently flying through, AND he can check books out from our local library system through overdrive. The case is good quality, too. About 6 months into (daily) use, the screen started to flicker and the kindle would freeze on occasion. It was relatively easy to do an online chat with an Amazon customer service rep, describe the problem, and get a brand new kindle + case shipped to our house the next day. We shipped the old one back and have had zero problems since. I'm now back on this page to buy another for our younger child and thought I'd stop and leave a glowing recommendation.
I LOVE this!!!! Although it doesn't show color, (which is about the only thing I don't love about it) it is still very cool. I got it when I was 9, back in 2015, and loved it! It doesn't show ads, which I really love, since does ANYONE like those pesky ads? Very good product, and totally worth your money.

This review is by a 12 year old: I love this kindle!!! It is light, and the case is the perfect color. The freetime allows me to track my reading progress and I can earn awards!!! So much fun! If you love to read and are a kid then I toatally recommend. I also like that it doesn't have a back light like the paperwhite. It means when it's bedtime that it's really bedtime and I can't read any more. My parents love that feature too. I have had the kindle about a week and I am really glad I saved my money to buy it. Update: After a week I thought ni I love it even more! If you have kids who love to read, most definitely get this for them. They will be forever grateful.
I went back and forth on whether or not to order this bundle for my children or just order the kindle on its own with a different case. In the end, this bundle was $5 more but it included a two year warranty. It also included ad free screens for my children. Another thing was that I could order three of these (I wanted to get kindles for my three active readers) where I could only order two of the regular kindles due to restrictions put in place by Amazon. I am very happy with my purchase and so are my three readers. Now if we could get some more kid titles added to Kindle Unlimited, we would all be thrilled!
This has been one of the best gift purchases I have made for my two oldest kids who are avid readers. I chose the Kindle for kids over the Fire because I wanted these devices to be JUST for reading. My kids use these constantly. They have long battery life and we are able to download free eBooks from the library (which is incredibly convenient and saves us a ton of money!). Other reviewers are mentioning this is not compatible with kids' books...I think they mean more picture books. For kids reading chapter books this is absolutely a GREAT buy and will help fuel your kids' reading fire. I recommend this again and again, such a great gift!
I bought one for a granddaughter in the first grade that was reading at 5th grade level. I bought it for xmas 2015. She loves it! She is inseparable from it. i am now purchasing one for her sister that is in the first grade but reading at grade level. She just discovered the joy of reading so this will be her birthday present! Love this little Kindle! I have a Fire 8 tablet which is too heavy to be an e-reader and the battery is terrible. It dies in one day of reading. I bought this for myself with the pink case, and I take it everywhere I go! No ads, 2 year protection plan, good battery, and not just for kids (I'm 26)! I did get a clip on book light because there isn't a back light like the Paperwhite, but I hardly read in darker areas. Love this Kindle!!!
