I personally own both the original Kandle (in black), and now the graphite Kandle 2! I have used them for my Kindle 3.
First of all, the only issue I had with the original Kandle was the brightness. It just wasn't QUITE bright enough at the bottom for my tastes. I saw the Kandle 2, and I figured it would be perfect. I was not let down.
Differences:
1. Original Kandle has only one setting. It's on or it's off. Kandle 2 has 2 brightness options.
2. Original Kandle has only two lights on each end of the unit. The Kandle 2 has three (one added in the middle). I have tested these side by side, and the actual difference in brightness is around 30% more for the first setting, 50% more for second setting. This equates to (for me) an absolute PERFECT illumination for the entire Kindle page. Bravo, Ozeri.
3. Instead of a "switch" type power button that you must almost use your fingernail to push over to one side, the new Kandle has a simple large button on the top. Push it once for low setting, again for high setting, again for off.
4. The feel of the plastic is almost velvety. The original Kandle is simply hard black shiny plastic. the graphite color is more matte. I noticed the "softness" immediately when I took it out of the package. Maybe I'm just a nerd, but it makes me love it even more. Also, the color is almost identical to the graphite color of the Kindle. That's a plus for fashionistas like myself (har har).
And there you have it! I absolutely love mine and will likely be purchasing another for my boyfriend and his original Kindle 1! You will not regret this purchase =)
I really dont understand why this could not have a rechargeable battery. Other than needing expensive CR2032 batteries this light is great. I just received it yesterday so I'm not sure what the battery life will be. Hopefully the battery life will be very long considering it's only powering 3 small LED's. FYI - even on the lowest light setting it'll still light up a room, I may try and tape something to dim it down even more so I can read in bed without disturbing my wife.
Originally, I wasn't too blown away by this light--I wish it were a little less bulky as I do find it a little tiring to hold up on the Kindle--but it's now over two years and still working, which makes it the longest lasting book light I have ever had. All this despite using it regularly, pretty much keeping it permanently clipped to my Kindle, unless a toddler has pulled it off and dropped it somewhere. This thing is sturdy! It is thin enough that I can zip my Kindle in its case with the light still attached. The biggest complaint I had--that it made my Kindle top-heavy to hold--was fixed when Amazon updated the Touch's software to include landscape mode. Now, the light is on the "side" when I hold it, making it easier. The final downside is that the small batteries are more pricey--I've gone through several sets of batteries and keep an extra set in my Kindle case as, when they finally die, they die quickly. I am really impressed.
I bought this to use with my 2nd generation Kindle. I think it is a lot nicer than those goose neck reading lights. The Kandle snaps securely on the device and doesn't seem invasive like the other light I have. I know that sounds odd, but I'm sure there's someone who knows what I'm talking about :-) The Kandle conforms to the shape of the Kindle, it's relatively flat, the adjustable lamp stays in place and shines down the page. It isn't as bright towards the bottom, but that's to be expected. The Kandle burns through batteries so pick up a package of batteries if you get this. This little light is smaller than a credit card and is truly portable. Another nice feature of this light is that you can't accidentally cut it on. The power button is at the base of the lamp, but it doesn't engage until the lamp is raised and it's pushed. To turn the light off, lower the lamp. So drop this in your bag or in a drawer without having to deal with a dead battery because something engaged the power button.
This is a nice addition for e-readers that are not back lit.

I just received my Graphite Kandle and I am thrilled. I had a leather cover so I didn't want to spend $60 for the all in one and I didn't want a light that was cumbersome or awkward. I swear I pretty much read every Kindle light review then I read the review for the Kandle. I thought the reviews were pretty good so I ordered it. It arrived today, one day delivery thanks to Prime. This Kandle is everything I wanted--small, compact, good light to the bottom of the page, adjustable and two light settings. The piece itself has a nice feel to it, I don't know if it is plastic or rubber but it feels wonderful when you hold it. It even came with a small cloth black case and a battery. I tested the light power in a dark closet and was amazed at the amount of light. There are 3 small recessed lights and two light settings---the lower setting will be great for me because the higher setting is really bright. The only thing is I wish the clip fitted a little snugger to the body of the Kindle, I worry over time the clip might become loose and not stay in place, and this is a small worry compared to the overall quality of the light. You will not go wrong buying this Kandle.
Because of all the issues I have read about and heard about with the lighted Kindle covers I refused to buy one. However most of my reading is done at night so I needed a light. I bought several different lights in the three weeks I have owned my Kindle and none of them worked the way I wanted. They didnt light the whole page, they had a horrible glare, they got in the way of my reading, they burned out quickly and so on. The Kandle on the other hand is PERFECT!!!! I can angle the light, it clips on without being in the way, there is no horrible glare, and best of all the light stays on the Kindle and not all over the room so I can read in bed and not disturb my husband. It also works great on regular books as my husband was using it the other day while reading. He also found that it is the perfect light to use in dark places with instruction manuals. I love the Kandle as it fits perfectly inside my neoprene cases zipper pocket when I do not need it. Plus the fact that for the price it also comes with batteries, an extra set of batteries and a screw driver for the battery compartment. Plus to order replacement batteries is only $5 for 25 batteries...that is a steal compared to the other lights I have purchased. I have used this light for a total of 49.5 hours so far and it is still just as bright as the day it arrived. Another benefit is that there are two light settings..bright and brighter so I can adjust it to fit my needs and neither one produces a glare. This light makes my Kindle experience even better!
After having used other book lights, including the kindle book cover with built in light and being unhappy with the bulky lights and finicky connections, I began searching for a lightweight convenient light to use for Kindle reading. I read the reviews on various lights, and hesitantly ordered the Krandle II. The light arrived from Amazon the next day, and I instantly loved it. It is small, lightweight and has two setting for bright and brighter. The battery compartment used to require a small screwdriver and now has a twist off lid for convenience. That improvement answered some of the previous negative feedback. Batteries are small, not adding weight to the product, and relatively inexpensive. Since I had eye surgery earlier this year, I find I need lots of light for reading, and this little light has answered my needs. I instantly ordered a second Krandle to give away as a gift. I highly recommend this little light as being small compact and bright!
I'm really impressed with the way this little book light illuminates the screen of the Kindle. The three white LEDs distribute the light very evenly, and, while it's a tiny bit brighter near the light source, there is no glare off the Kindle's screen whatsoever, which is perfect for nocturnal reading.
This light has two power settings, although there isn't much difference in brightness between the two. The lowest setting is more than adequate for situations in which a book light is needed.
The light is compact and lightweight, and doesn't really affect the readability of the Kindle. Holding the Kindle with the light attached is still well balanced.
My only issue, if it can be called that, is that the back clip could be a half inch or so longer to accommodate the beveled edges of the back of the Kindle. As it is, the light doesn't feel as though it's clipped on as securely as it could be. That's just a nit, however. The best workaround for this issue is to not toss your Kindle around.
Otherwise, this light is an absolute joy to use. If you're on the fence about which book light to buy, you should definitely consider this one.
This is the perfect reading light for your traditional book or e-reader! With 3 LED lights situated horizontally across the frame, and 2 brightness levels, you have all the light you need to read in comfort wherever you are. Lights illuminate the whole page, with only slightly less brightness at the very bottom of the page.
The patent pending grip does not block the screen on any eBook reader. Works well on regular books as well--no blocking text, and plenty of light so no eyestrain.
I easily positioned this light on my Kindle, which has a cover, and I can still close and secure the cover even with the light attached. Very convenient!
Comes with 2 CR2O32 batteries installed (plus an extra set of batteries). Also comes with a protective pouch for traveling.
Very lightweight and compact.
The best portable reading light I've tried! I'll keep this light for decades!
