I purchased the Kindle 2 within a week of its release. I carry it everywhere. The first thing I am concerned with when purchasing any portable electronic tool is having a back up charger - preferably for both home and vehicle. Initially, I went for the iGo Everywhere PS00252-0003 Universal Wall (AC) and Auto (DC) Charger with Retractable Cable (Charger Only, Tips Not Included) which was recommended when I purchased my Kindle 2. However, when it arrived, I tried to purchase a tip for the Kindle 2 and there was none to be found (Kindle 1 yes!) - even the vendor didn't have one available. One of the things that drew me to it was the shared cable. I would only have to carry one tip (wall or car) and share a cable. I returned the iGo - didn't satisfy my needs. Then I purchased the Gomadic Corp. Essential Kit.
When it arrived, I was PLEASANTLY surprised to see that it used detachable USB cables for each charger - vehicle and wall. WOW! I can carry either tip (vehicle/wall) and one detachable USB cable to plug into each. These detachable cables also let me connect my Kindle 2 to my PC for file transfers (like the original USB cable/charger that came with my Kindle 2).
I now have two extra USB cables, so I can keep one at home as a back-up. I am already using the plugs (vehicle/wall) and USB cable (separately) instead of the cable that came with my Kindle 2. Talk about multi-use ... this product is great. Best of all, I do a lot of traveling overseas and this lets me use one product for all my traveling.
The fact that it auto-switches for foreign voltage (240) and the built in circuitry for surge protection and over charging ... makes this product a must have for anyone who does a lot of travel.
One final point - since I needed both a wall and vehicle charger, this product offers both for twice the price of the Amazon Kindle 2 Replacement Power Adapter. But it gives me - TWO detachable USB cables and a way to charge my Kindle 2 in the car.
The DC adapter cable is very short and coiled. The picture isn't accurate. Eyeball estimate of length is two feet. It will stretch to most front-seats in cars/trucks but if your device is big, like a tablet, you might end up having to put your tablet on the floor of the car/truck.
The AC adapter is about three feet in length. The short length might be a problem if your power strip is behind or under a desk or hard to reach. You might have to make alternate arrangements.
I originally purchased these for a Kindle Fire but since learned that Gomadic has custom power cables for the Kindle Fire. When I asked Gomadic about it, they took the time to explain things. The Kindle Fire requires a higher current, 2A v/s 1A. These chargers will work with the Kindle Fire but you might not get a rapid charge as expected. Also, the AC adapter might get warm during the charging process.
BTW, Gomadic sent me a free Kindle Fire AC adapter. Seriously. I didn't even ask for it. That is AWESOME customer service.

I'm going through my orders, reviewing everything I failed to review at the time of purchase. I can't imagine why I didn't review this sooner, as it still works for the newest Kindles. (I'm writing this in 2016.) I keep the car version in the glove box, and the electrical version in my hospital bag, as I seem to wind up in the hospital far more often than I wish I did. I recommend this kit.
The items ordered will make using my Kindle easier, and I appreciate finding everything needed at one location.
Global Wireless.
I am a very frequent traveller and I read a book a week on the planes. Kindle was my solution to buying the latest releases in hardcover. It is compact and does not take up a lot of space in my laptop case. My eye sight is also not as good as it once was, and the ability to increase the font is a plus for me.
The cost of books from Amazon is better than buying them at the airport. The fact that I can re-read a book when I am on the road as it is on the Kindle.
Dictionary is great, notations excellent.
I have not used the headphones yet so I cannot comment on that.
The negatives for me are -
1) There is no light source which surprised me. I expected that the Kindle to be designed with an illuminated background. Having to buy a clip on light is additional, having to clip the light on is a pain, not to mention an additional item to carry with me on travels. I chose not to read instead under those circumstances.
2) It would be nicer if the PGUP/DN button are softer. I find that I have to depress them quite a bit. A softer/lighter touch button would certainly be better.
3) I think the Kindle designers could have designed the screen panel to be maximized onto the unit itself. I bought the more compact global version. The keyboard takes up 1/3 of the unit. I do hardly use the keyboard. Perhaps the next generation can be a keyboard that only appears over the screen if a button is depressed. Now, wouldn't that be cool!!
4) Something to know for GLobal purchasers which I didn't know when I bought it. When buying Kindle books, the global version download usually costs more than if you bought it for the US version.
I also bought the Cole Haan leather cover. It simply simply luxurious!

Needed a new charger for Kindle. Received it promptly and it works wonderfully.
I love the fact that you get two Kindle USB cords AND a wall adaptor and car adaptor. If you have other electronic equipment (iPod, BlackBerry, Palm device, etc.) these will be incredibly handy. It's really great to leave the adaptor plugged into your car and just change the USB cord to fit your device. In a perfect world, all these devices would use a universal cord but, until that happens, these adaptors and cords make life a little bit easier.
This power supply is a supplemental one for the one that accompanies the Kindle. We use it for charging at the office and leave the accompanying one for home. It appears to do what it was designed to do.
No information on long-term reliability - we've only had it a month or so, but it appears to be well-made.
Recommended as a supplemental charger/power supply.
I've left more of these in hotel rooms and places I've visited than I card to admit, at least 3 or 4. Good solid product that fits and works. Meets all my expectations even works on my new Kindle (car version) and Nikon camera.
Arrived on time and well packaged. Extremely pleased.
I read in the car whenever I'm riding with my husband. The car charger is a must-have. The cord length allows me to read while my Kindle is charging. I already have a wall charger, so I gave the one that came with this to my daughter. I am very satisfied with the products.
