Unlike speakers and laptops, I don’t purchase a lot of new televisions. I didn’t get a HD set until my Trinitron wouldn’t power on and I didn’t get a big screen LCD until I upgraded to a Blue-Ray DVD player. I had no intention of getting a 4K set until broadcast channels bragged about it, and I didn’t care if it was a “smart TV” or not because television manufactures abandon those sets a year or two after they sell them. Whatever 4K set I would own, it would get all its “smarts” from the latest edition of the Fire TV box. When I saw Element was integrating Fire TV into a 4K set, I was interested. (I have been secretly waiting for the Fire TV boxes got get an integrated tuner, this is the next best thing.)
Setup was straightforward. After attaching the feet, you plug it in, push the power button and it starts up. The first boot gives you a tutorial and run-through of the interface. You can find them again under the Notifications Bell if you skip it. The boot time is a little long since you must wait for both the Element logo and the normal Fire TV startup process. After the first startup, it gets quicker.
If are familiar with the Fire TV, you will be right at home, but I am glad I did not ignore the tutorial, without it, I would not have found how to scan for channels with my antenna. You find the antenna input, then push the menu button to find the Scan Channels option.
After scanning for channels, I had one issue. The sound was horrible. I scanned for channels again, checked the settings on my Yamaha receiver, and tried again. It was still terrible, like there was static, or the television speaker was on with the receiver and I was getting an echo from the interference. I moved my mud-flap antenna and tried scanning channels again with the same result. I played around in the TV’s settings and found I had a software update waiting. The update fixed the sound issue.
That’s another reason I like Amazon’s Fire TV ecosystem. Even my first generation Fire TV is running current software. I hope this set gets the same service. (OK better service, since I intend to keep the set longer than a $40 Fire TV box).
I have been cable television free for four years. When Amazon announced the “channels” option for Amazon Video I knew it was the ecosystem for me. If you have not used the add-on channels feature of Amazon Video, you should, it’s as close to à la carte cable television as you can get. Add Netflix and you will not miss cable television. Add the integrated antenna TV guide and you have a complete package. It is so nice that I might spring for that outdoor antenna to clear up some weak channels my indoor mud-flap antenna cannot pick up (antenna TV is a long way from the four channels I had as a child). When you are in the guide, you can hit the menu button to add channels to a favorite list and filter out all the clutter, that should be enough to keep from a new antenna. A feature I did not expect is that the “live” channels of my HBO add-on channel are included in the guide. My favorite channel list is now the HBO channels, ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC, and the three PBS stations. (OK, and the Accu-Weather channel. I am guilty).
When you hold down the Home button, you get a fly-out menu that gets you into the Channel Guide, where you can select inputs, your applications, the sleep timer and your picture and sound settings. Since I use a Yamaha receiver and Polk speakers, I can’t speak for the sound options. The options for adjusting the picture are limited to the usual presets and some advanced options. Before you spend a lot of time tweaking these, know that you will have to do so at least twice. Once for live TV, and again for Video. Since you are not switching inputs, this frustrated me, until I found the mode indicator at the top of the Picture Settings menu. You can tweak your settings for each mode, and that is a good thing.
You Advanced Options are limited to Motion Smoothing, Noise Reduction, Color Temperature and Color Mode. If you want finer control, then you must start with the Custom Picture Mode setting to gain access to Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Tint, and Sharpness. If you are looking for finer adjustments, you are out of luck.
For now, I have chosen the Standard picture mode, turned noise reduction and motion smoothing to their lowest settings, set the color mode to native, and chose the standard color temperature. The set comes with all these on their highest settings or auto along with the backlight at an eye-searing 100. I am playing with the backlight between off and very low (below 25) with nice results.
The remote is the standard Fire TV remote affair, except the home, reverse, and menu buttons are above the ring (annoying). The prime video, Netflix, and Amazon Music buttons are a nice touch, and thanks to HDMI CEC control I retired my smart remote. Powering the set on, powers up my Yamaha receiver and the volume buttons pass through to my receiver as well.
Overall, I am happy with the set. Since cutting the cable cord, the number of devices on my television stand have been dwindling, and that makes me very happy. Now if a set would just come with some really rocking speakers, you know like the consoles of old…
UPDATE: This is a bright television, and like all models sold today the preset picture options work better in a showroom than a living room. In a dark living room, the brightness, especially the backlight, tears shadows apart and creates a pixelated or color washed effect. Most people fall for the marketing of extra features like HDR or even OLED in an attempt to fix those defects. But the fact is with eight million pixels at your command a calibrated set will beat a feature loaded set every time. You cannot adjust brightness and contrast on this box after selecting one of the picture presets. You have to choose Custom, then custom again to find everything set at a nice 50/50.
Brightness and Contrast are the two most important settings, and there are test patterns you can use to help make those adjustments. I grabbed an application with those patterns, but the operating system went into another screen mode (application) when running the application, so it didn't do any good. I ended up using Game of Thrones, with its dark interior castle scenes, overly warm desert scenes, and overly cool winter scenes to arrive at the following the settings. The result is simply stunning.
Picture Mode: Custom
Settings
Brightness: 45
Contrast: 75 (YMMV between 65 and 90)
Saturation: 42 (enough to take the red out of the cheeks on the overly warm GOT scenes)
Tint: 50
Sharpness 0 (just a joke on a 4k screen)
Color Temperature: Standard (Warm was way too warm for me. Never choose cool)
Noise Reduction: Off (or Low, Because most content is upscaled to 4k resolution, otherwise off is fine.)
Motion Smoothing: Strong (Sacrilege!! You owe it to yourself to watch the opening sequence of GOT with Motion Smoothing at Strong or Intermediate. If feels 3D. This set benefits from either Motion Smoothing or Noise Reduction being on. If you use them both, keep them at Low)
Backlight: 20 (As low as 9, not higher than 25)
Color Space: Auto
The TV I replaced this with was a Vizio:VIZIO Smart LED HDTV (2014 Model) - which was also a 55 inch TV. I’ve had no problems with my Vizio, mind you and actually kind of love it. I was just super excited about the integrated Amazon fire TV and heard a lot of raving reviews about 4K. I guess I was feeling a bit spoiled and felt the need to have my fire-stick built right it… also, with Game of Thrones right around the corner and entering the final 2 seasons I felt we had to really go out with a bang and see what this 4K was all about.
I wasn’t sure the 4K was going to make that much of a difference but it was worth it to take the chance considering the price of the TV is actually pretty reasonable. The moment the TV turned on, the whole picture just POPPED into my living room and drew me in. It was like being there. And it was awesome.
I was ready to say goodbye to my Vizio (well, not really goodbye. She was just moving upstairs to our bedroom). The thing that I will miss about the Vizio is that the dimensions in Length and Height are bigger making the 55inch TV appear larger than the Element even though technically speaking the dimensions are the same in regards to the TV being 55 inches diagonally. My living room wall looks a little bare with Amazon Element. So keep this in mind if you are swapping out TV’s. Always read the dimensions, like ALL of them. I might have gotten the bigger TV had I done my due diligence, as the lovely Judge Faith Jenkins would say. Although the Element doesn’t do much in the way of height at least it is longer length wise.
Setup on this thing is ridiculously easy. The only way I can prove this to you is to tell you I am the tech genius of the family. My fianace is technically challenged to put it kindly and I was shocked as you-know-what when I heard that sucker up and running when I was cooking dinner. It must be super intuitive. He said it was just a quick tutorial after syncing it to wifi. Long story short – The Element basically sets up itself.
I have not yet used the cable antenna but at almost $200 a month and having subscriptions to Netflix, Prime and Hulu – after reading Troy’s very thorough review (1st review on the TV) I’m actually considering going old style. Or, old-new style, lol. I might seriously look into that. It’s insanely cheaper in comparison to all that Amazon has to offer.
I have not yet seen the need to adjust anything visually regarding size or picture preferences (but definitely I will check out what other reviewers say). This TV seems perfect out of the box at the moment but maybe I'm just too awestruck right now.. The visuals are so astounding I found myself a bit hypnotized. I think I’m going to get sucked right in watching Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season [Blu-ray] next week! Not that I’d mind… as long as I get sucked into wherever Daenerys is, as you can probably guess from my Amazon handle.
As for the sound, we got the sound bar to go with the TV (AmazonBasics Bluetooth Sound Bar) and WOW does not disappoint. I would say definitely splurge for this option to complete the set. It’s frekin’ amazingly awesome. My whole house rocks and now one less echo I have to buy!
The fire-tv options are pretty much the same you’d see on the firestick so we all probably know that but if you’re new to it – it’s pretty easy to pick up.
I love talking to Alexa through the remote – I’m just a stickler for that. You can ask her all sorts of questions. You can tell her what show to turn on. You can her when to pause. How many seconds to rewind or fast forward a TV show or video. You can ask her to put on some music.
And if you have all that fancy stuff she can control your lights and alarms and probably your mind... Haven't gotten to that point yet but it's legit insane!
If Alexa were real, I'd dump my fiance and ask her to marry me. Except she can be a bit temperamental.
Just try asking her whose gonna win the Game of Thrones...
Okay, so I am changing my review once again and this time giving it 5 stars now. I started to get very annoyed with this set, the remote would work when it wanted too, some buttons you had to press for a long time in order for it to work. The tv had a major update that took at least 20 minutes and Bam! The tv now works perfectly, and the colors have improved tremendously. The blacks are blacker and the color all around has improved. This happened at the perfect time because I was just about to get rid of these TV's!
So I changed this review from 3 to 4 stars... My original review will be at the bottom of this new added information.
So, there is no way to professionally calibrate this TV, so after speaking with my friend who professionally calibrated TV's for a living, he came over and we worked on the TV until we got the picture to my satisfaction.
So the first thing he did was go into the first color setting and put that into custom, he lowered the sharpness to 0 but didn't touch any of the other settings. Then in the second color setting which is in advance setting he turned it to warm, then he lowered the backlight brightness to 76. All of this is with the motion setting to bypass which means off.
Now the picture looks pretty good but still not amazing but it's 100 percent better then it look out of the box and I am sure you'll be more than happy with this setting, that setting was for my 55 inch, for the 50 inch the only difference was he lowered the backlight setting to 64 instead of the 76 that he did for the 55 inch.
Now what I noticed is that you have to manually changed each input to this setting because it doesn't automatically change all of the outputs to this setting.
These settings help out trust me, it took days of working on it and hours with a professional to get it right.
So, as like most of the other reviewers here, I bought this and the 50 inch on sale and basically bought two TV's for the price of one.... With that said, the two TV's combined still cannot match the quality of the one that I was going to buy. However, that is the video snob in me.
First, a little bit about me, I come from a high end audio system and TV's and once the family started growing, the high endness started shrinking and the more money I have to save and college I have to pay for the more budget minded I have been forced to become... Except I will never get a minivan! I put my foot down!
So, my pioneer elite plasma finally started dying (RIP) that I bought many years ago and til this day it's picture tops expensive TV's that are available today and imagine I paid almost 9k for that TV and I'm replacing it with a 400 dollar TV...
Please don't throw your remote at the screen after reading that... And the funny thing is I was able to sell it as is for 600...
So, back to the element... The picture quality out of the box is bad, real bad, only those whom say it's amazing or good are those who have never seen a fully calibrated TV on the mid to high end side...
So, first thing first, please turn off the motion setting which forces the TV to have what is called a soap opera effect which is horrible on this TV, that alone will help the picture quality. Then lower the backlit brightness, this TV forces brightness which is horrible, that alone washes out the blacks, lower the contrast and put it on movie mode, this alone will help out a lot... This TV doesn't let you really dig deep into setting the picture quality to perfection but do what I have recommended and you'll see a major difference.
One major recommendation is, please make sure that your internet is steady and fast enough to do a wireless update, if not connect it to Ethernet. Because if your internet isn't steady and is choppy you will have software issues from a bad update. People have complained about this and it isn't the TV's fault, it's the internet service that you are offering to the TV.
The remote is bad, sometimes I have to press the remote buttons hard for it to send a command to the TV which is frustrating, to make it worse, connecting a universal remote is a waste of time as you will still end up needing the remote that it came with for certain button functions. I wish I was able to use the number functions on my harmony remote to change the channel which isn't an option, also the universal remote will not change the TV to an input, which isn't bad because it's easy to switch from the menu but if you program a remote to switch everything for you that's what you want it to do...
Now, for those who send this TV back right away due to the picture quality, I don't blame you, however every TV needs a break in period, give it a few days to break in and then make the decision to return it, but if you have the chance to get an LG or Samsung then go for it.
This TV does not have HDR, it's a basic 4k TV, for me I have the dvdo edge which allows me to tweak the TV setting further which and made the TV look even better when using an input.
I hate the fact that the TV doesn't automatically switch over to an input when you turn something on.
I like the fact that the TV turns on right away and off right away, that alone is a major plus, because with both my pioneer and lg and Samsung TVs they took a while to turn on.
If you're use to the fire TV home screen then you will love this TV, I have always had a fire TV so this works for me very well.
The TV Turner on these TV's are amazing, in fact, these are the best TV tuners I've seen on any other TV so far, I am in NYC with a large old school TV antenna on the roof, with my other TV's I was only able to get 40 channels and with these TV's gave me exactly 63 channels. So that's a major plus.
The TV is very fast as well, I click on an input or channel or movie and it switched over right away with no lag.
This TV is amazing with gaming as well, I watched my son play Forza 7 and it looked amazing, I watched my daughter play Minecraft and that crappy game look amazing and I played my MLB the show 17 and amazing...
The sound quality sucks bad no matter how much you try to work on it, but I have a Bose solo which helps in a major way, I can tell that Bose made the solo system for TV's like this

Just 1, I was one of the ones who received a damaged TV from Prime Day. I knew I needed a 55" for my new home but also knew I had a 5 day window to get the TV, set it up, ck it over, and then begin packing. Being a large item, it needed packed 1st. So, when the 1st TV arrived with the package so damaged I did not even bother to open the box. NOTE: THE SHIPPER WAS NOT A REGULAR AMAZON CARRIER! The driver RAN to the truck after dropping it on my porch.
The customer service at Amazon was superior, wonderful, set up a return/replace IMMEDIATLY. The problem was, It was going to have to be set up and checked, the packaging was over and beyond, complete bubble wrap, not at all like the 1st damaged one. I was already in packing mode, I did not have the room to unbox a 55" TV, set it up, ck it for problems, and then repack it, SAD! In the back of my mind I knew it was the carrier that Amazon usually doesn't use, BUT, I had to be sure that the entire Prime Day inventory was not handled like the original one - I just could not let it sit in a box over a month, then find problems with it. So, a dear friend needed a 55" as her older old had died the week before. I let her have my 55" Fire TV and am extremely envious. The TV is perfect in every way and I could have taken a chance and not unpacked it until after closing - but we all know how a closing date can change.
All I can say is that with the expense of buying/selling a home - I will have to live with my old 40" until the 55Fire goes on sale again. That is life and at least someone who I like has the television of my dreams!
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY REVIEWS FROM PEOPLE WHO RECEIVED A SHIPPER DAMAGED TV, it is unfair to review something you could not plug in and see how it looks and works. Amazon could not know that the shipper who uses Budget trucks to deliver items when they are overworked would handle electronics so badly.
I definitely haven't experienced any of the negative reviews that are listed here. I was honestly quite nervous for it to arrive after reading through all of them. My TV arrived in perfect condition. All programs loaded very quickly. My remote doesn't need to be pointed right at the TV. My color is great and uninterrupted. Sound is better than I expected. I haven't spent too much time on the color, but what really helped was turning on my Nintendo Switch and playing Zelda which I am extremely used to the colors and sharpness. I haven't spent too much time with Alexa, but testing it with switching between inputs and apps has been a breeze. The best part is the over the air channels come in fantastic. We don't pay for cable anymore, so I am looking forward to getting a more powerful antenna to pick up more channels. Overall I am extremely happy with this TV and you really can't beat the price!! I would say to consider the hundreds of people who haven't left a review and let that balance out the negative reviews here. Photo is of over the air channel in low light. Looks great!

I am very happy with this TV. I bought it to cut the cable with satellite TV, going completely online for entertainment, and I am not disappointed. The setup was easy, the settings are easy to manage, and the apps load and work great. I am also happy with the antenna for local broadcast stations, but need to move the antenna into the attic for a better signal on a couple stations. My only real limitation at the moment is that my copper internet connection, which is changing to fiber and speeding up tomorrow, is currently a little slow when doing a lot of streaming. The TV itself is well made, sturdy, a great size, and has stunning picture quality. I went from a Sony Trinitron tube TV to this, and couldn't believe the clarity, color and detail I was seeing. The sound is good, but I'm waiting on a digital audio optical cable to connect my sound bar. It would have been nice if the TV included a component option for audio out (like they included for older video in components) since my sound bar is older, but the optical cable was very inexpensive and will arrive tomorrow. I also found that I need to update to the new version of the Alexa app in order to use my echo dots with the TV for hands free voice control, and to do that I need to update my Android KitKat OS on my tablet to support the updated app. That is a bit frustrating, but I'm working on it because I was excited to use my echo dot to control the TV. For now though, the non hands free voice and manual remote that comes with the TV is sufficient and easy to use. If this TV continues to perform well, and I am able to resolve the echo dot pairing issue, I may be purchasing a second one for my living room entertainment system.
1/23/18 Update:
6 months in and I really like this television. The black levels seem to be much better, especially if you're streaming Amazon content. But even Netflix looks better now. I don't know if this has to do with one of the updates that the tv has received over the past few months or not, but the picture is either better or I'm just more used to it.
The one thing that hasn't changed is my distaste for the remote control. It's cheap and eats batteries like crazy. I'm used to changing remote batteries every few years (even my Roku remote didn't go through that many) but I've had to change batteries in this remote twice in 6 months. Also, removing the batter compartment plate is difficult, and the second time I had to do it I broke the tab so it doesn't stay on perfectly well. But I'll be darned if I have to shell out $35 for a new one.

I bought this on Prime Day to replace a 5 year old Element 40" I bought on Black Friday at Target, so I'm not coming to this from some other high-end Samsung or Sony perspective.
There was a significant wait for this television, apparently it was a big seller on Prime Day and is currently out of stock. I waited just over a week for delivery. I had read some initial reviews before I bought it on a couple of tech sites, so I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting. Imagine my shock, then, when I went back to the item description to peruse user reviews a few days before mine was set to arrive: they were filled with horror stories of broken and poorly working televisions arriving in peoples' homes. I waited in suspense to see in what condition mine would arrive!
I'm happy to report mine came in one piece. My 7 year old helped me take it out of the box and mount the feet. We put it on our credenza and plugged it in. Setup couldn't have been more than 5-7 minutes and it was up and running. It took another 10 minutes or so to do the firmware update for the television itself as well as the remote.
What I like:
- Thin bezel. My 5 year old Element had something like a 3inch bezel around the edges, made it look very old fashioned in an era of ultraslim and ultrathin HDTV's. It's also very light for its size.
- Bright screen
- FireTV integration. This is the whole reason to buy the tv, right? As much as I don't love Amazon's FireTV interface, as a longtime FireTV stick owner, my family and I have gotten used to it. All of our apps (Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now) are right there, as well as Amazon movies and television shows.
- LIVE TV GUIDE. This is the game-changer for me. I cut the cord a long time ago. In 2006 I had a Mac Mini hooked up to my old 36inch tube tv and was streaming shows from random websites. But I still like watching live tv on occasion, especially during football season. I don't know if any other companies offer a similar feature, but I absolutely love the live over-the-air (i.e. antenna) tv feature on this version of FireTV. You do an antenna scan, like you do with most HDTVs, then on the main FireTV display there's a series of boxes, just like for apps or movies, that says "What's On Now" (or something to that effect) and it shows one for ABC, NBC, FOX, etc. When you highlight one of those boxes a Picture in Picture style image pops up in the upper right corner and shows what's on currently. There's also a full cable-style program guide that lets you see what's coming up on all of your live channels. And when you're in live tv, you can pause the show for something like 15-20minutes. It's not a full-fledged DVR, since you can't actually capture recordings (though I'm sure they could provide that with a firmware update and use of the SD card slot in the back of the tv. Amazon, if you're listening, I would pay extra for that!!!).
What I don't like so much:
- As others have noted, the black levels aren't great and there is some pixilation that occurs on dark scenes. Again, this is a sub-$1000 55 inch television.
- I wish the remote had more functionality (mute button, numbers, etc.) It also feels a lot flimsier than my FireTV stick remote. I've seen on other reviews that there's no real universal remote function with it, but haven't experienced this myself yet.
- Sound is pretty lousy. Par for the course for pretty much all HDTVs, even the high-end ones. I have a Sony soundbar I can plug in, just haven't done it yet. Per the above comment, I've heard that the volume control on the Fire remote will not control an auxiliary source such as a soundbar, but again haven't tested it for myself yet.
- It's automatically set to motion-smoothing "soap opera" effect, but that's easy enough to turn off.
We'll see how it goes for longevity. I've seen a lot of negative comments around here regarding Element as the partner for these tvs, but as I said before, my former HDTV was a cheap Element 40 inch from Target and it still works beautifully after nearly 5 years. We get so spoiled by modern technology, but I had a flippin' black and white 13 inch tv in my kitchen as a kid! Even the lousiest HDTV is light years better than anything people over 30 years old grew up with.
Overall extremely pleased with my purchase. I'd probably be a little harsher if I hadn't got the Prime Day deal and paid full price, but I'm sure around Thanksgiving these will drop significantly again. I was actually prepared to wait until then to buy mine, and only pulled the trigger early due to the Prime Day sale.
Updated. It's even better than I thought! You can scroll at the bottom to see what else is on, unlike the firestick, switch back and forth between local channels and those you have as apps! I am so glad I got rid of cable, my sling allows me to record 100 hrs, and I hear Hulu has now updated to allow the same. I spend about $50/month for my apps, sling to, Netflix, Hulu hbo now and amazon prime (which I have for the convenience of ordering goods, not tv or movies). Cutting cable more than paid for this tv. Will be buying a smaller version for bedroom? Don't be afraid to cut cable, they ripped me off, all the extra fees...apps are straightforward and honest, no hidden charges. I am 60 yrs of age. I don't play games on my tv, so take this for what it's worth. Beautiful picture. Easy set up, did it myself. Yes the stand seems a little wobbly, but safe. I will ask my kids to wall mount it for me soon. I ordered the 55 inch, as I needed a smart tv and just recently cut cable (so glad I did). And for $400 I just figured why not. I am so pleased with it, and for my needs, I could not have done better. Don't think I need a sound bar, as it sounds okay. I recommend it.
Frequently I have to RE-Boot the TV because it thinks the Wi-Fi isn't working correctly... After hours of trouble shooting the WI-FI system I figured out that it's the TV. Restart (Reboot) and it figures it out and re-connects correctly...(and turning off the TV and then back on is not the same as Restarting the TV???) It's just a hassle and a waste of time trouble shooting the Wi-Fi system when it's not the problem.
And why wouldn't you be able to Re-Boot just the Wi-Fi system and not the entire TV?
The Settings menu leaves a lot to be desired. Someone thinks it's organized... But none of the people that have been to my place...
Where would you think you would find Restart?

Surprise it's in Device & Software! Not Inputs, Not Network (where a restart Wi-Fi Should Be!), Not Display & Sound, Not Preferences, and Not My Account.

I am going to be very honest, I was scared to death ordering this TV and reading all the bad reviews one after another. I was able to lower my family's expectations that they pretty much thought TV is gong to arrive with shattered glasses or will have lot of problems with user interface or how to use it. We were so pleased that this TV came in perfect physical condition that we can tell, its been 2 days and no issues so far (hope none happens). Here are few things I like:
1. Amazing picture quality. 4K says it all.
2. Sound: I have a home theater system (receiver and all that stuff) but I like the sound of this TV, yeah off-course if I want to shake my neighborhood I will use my receiver system but for most of the daily watching stuff I dont need to even turn-on my home theater system.
3. Fire TV integration: Love it, I never had used it but find user interface and using it super straight forward. Make sure you update the software.
4. Remote: Out of the box sluggish but wait you know what first thing you need to do as soon as you plug this baby, update your software immediately and after that remote is smooth.
5. Some software glitches like my Netflix, some other apps wont work out of the box but as soon as I upgraded to latest software it was all good. Prime Music says "Sorry..." but when logged in to amazon.com from mac and used prime music after that it started working. BTW, loved Prime Music.
6. Alexa is mostly good but it acts stupid sometime such as when watching Netflix you ask it to pause but it does not understand. I guess works well with Amazon instant video.
Overall, I say this is a great package with unbelievable price and Amazon customer service is behind you so go for it Bubba!
