Slice 10514 Mini Cutter, Ceramic Safety Blade, Pocket Sized, Auto-Retractable, Stays Sharp Up to 11X Longer

I have two little girls and a wife who enjoys online shopping so this is the perfect household tool for slicing packages without the risk of injuring little fingers. It's ideal for letters, paper, art mats, kids’ craft projects and other common items that show up on the front porch every day.

Our much anticipated Slice Mini Cutter arrived today and popped out of the blister pack with a nice audible snap, landing in my lap like an alien pod birth. Nicely designed with smooth oval lines, you can run your fingers around its edges like an oversized plastic fava bean. I tested it out. The blade snaps back safely, yet it cuts when needed.

I’ll carry the mini cutter around as an everyday resource. With today’s on-demand package economy, who wants to be running around looking for the tool you need when you can keep a small one with you on your key chain and have it ready when you need it?

For the price, this is pretty good. It's very small, and it has a magnet so you can put it on your fridge. I do kind of wish it was slightly bigger, just because i have larger hands. It cuts through normal boxes with ease, and sufficiently scores thicker boxes so they can be ripped apart easily. It would be extremely difficult to hurt yourself with this. Wife was very doubtful when it arrived, because of its size, and lack of metallic blade, but after watching me try it out on a few boxes, she was pretty impressed with it.

Buy this ceramic pocket cutter to open packages, blister packs, etc. and you will wonder how you lived without it.

Whenever I get a package, from Amazon of course, this pocket cutter slices through it easily and neatly. It's almost like an extension of my hand. I've used this to cut through extremely sharp blister packs, padded envelopes, plastic ties, and lots of other things. I like the retractable blade because it extends when you need to cut and then gets out of the way which is really cool and really safe for whatever it is that you are cutting. If you use a fixed blade, you can potentially cut whatever is sitting right under the blade since you have no control over the length of the blade. The Mini Cutter has a built in magnet which I use to attach it to my stapler on my desk. It's not as strong as I like but it does the job. The dual blade is also interchangeable with the larger Slice cutter (which I also have).

Previously, I was using a mini Swiss Army Knife and it did a pretty good job but for the uses I listed above, the pocket cutter is a much better choice.

If someone were to permanently borrow this, I can see it ruining my day.

Highly Recommend!

EDIT December 21, 2016: Just wanted to say that this is one of those products that has become a part of my daily routine. I open a lot of packages and this is my go-to tool/item for that. The cutter actually feels like an extension of my hand and it is so much safer to use than a box cutter. The sound of the ceramic blade slicing through packaging is really nice. If I ever lost this cutter, I'd be very disappointed.

I bought several of these for work and one for home. And I have now opened so many items with ease
* At work we are opening a new office and being the computer guy I needed an easy way to open hundreds of boxes
* * To date I have now open several hundred boxes, computers, monitors, phones, keyboards, cables and so on and so on. This little ceramic blade just keeps going and has yet gotten dull. A regular razor blade would have gunked up by now and would of had to be replaced. The ceramic somehow prevents the tape from boxes from sticking to it.
* Highly recommend for those of you out there who get frequent deliveries or work in an area that lots of packages need opening.
***The only item I found that you could not open very well are plastic envelope packages because the cutter pulls rather than cut***

Update: I have recieved it! ... and it deserves the 5 star rating. But I have to reply on some of the comments from some reviews: THIS CUTTER WASNT MEANT FOR INDUSTRIAL USE!! So yeah it would make better sense to use a box cutter! Ppl expect this object which is obviously for home use to function as a box cutter in their work!! I bought this b/c I frequently order online and I got tired of using the blade of scissors or not having anything handy but didnt want a heady duty package opener. This is for use at home-in my opinion.

Description

This powerful mini tool will be your new best friend around the house, at the office, in shipping and receiving, or on the manufacturing floor. The auto-retracting 10515 can handle just about any common material up to 10 mm deep, but is safe to the touch because of Slice’s unique blade.

Traditional blades are sharpened to excess because metal dulls quickly. This workaround increases the blade’s lifespan but puts the user at risk for lacerations. Traditional ceramic blades mimic this dangerous sharpness. Slice developed a patent-pending grind that starts out at a safe, effective sharpness, and stays there up to 11 times longer than steel.

The 10514 is designed to keep everyone safer. To change the blade orientation for left-handed users, use the no-tool blade change switch at the back to open the cutter and move the blade into the opposing slot. Because the blade is finger friendly, handling and changing the blade is much safer. Rounded-tip blades do not require sharps box disposal.

The auto-retracting version of this popular tool retracts the blade into the handle as soon as you let go of the slider, so you never accidentally leave the blade exposed. A manual version with two preset cutting depths is also available (see 10515).

As with any blade, Slice blades are not intended to withstand a side load. Please do not use the blade as a screwdriver, or to pry anything open. It is not recommended to use the blade against a very hard surface, such as hardwood or concrete.

This Mini Cutter features an onboard magnet and lanyard hole to keep it close by. It’s ideal for cutting materials such as clamshell packaging, paper, packing tape, double-walled corrugate, box board, flexible plastics, leather, and vinyl sheeting.

Both Mini Cutters are compatible with the 10404 (rounded tip) and 10408 (pointed tip) blades. Cutters include one installed 10404 blade when shipped.

This little cutter is so cute! Of course, that is not the only reason I like it. The magnet part is cool as I just put it on my fridge and grab it when I need it. I have small hands so it fits perfectly. I would imagine someone with larger hands might find this too small. I can barely reach an octave when playing the piano if that helps you realize the size of my hands. The only reason I only gave it four stars is because I wish that it had a way for the blade to be locked in the open position while using it. I have a weak grip right now due to carpal tunnel possibly or something like that so it's not hard to hold open while using but for me it would be easier if I could lock it open. Now that I am writing this I realize that I didn't really examine it closely so maybe there is a way to lock it and I hope someone will tell me but for now, that's my review!

it’s ergonomic, Cute! :), small, the ceramic zirconium blade is really cool, and it definitely works for blister packs and cardboard. But it’s not going to slice a sheet of paper in half like butter if you hold it in the air, I’m just trying to test it on regular cutting tasks that don’t include opening boxes . I think it works well for a lot of jobs, but not for every single job. This is because the blade is it actually pointy or sharp. The blade is sharp in a way that it will cut cardboard and blister packs, but will it sliced through zip ties? No I don’t think so. But I will have to test that. It’s not going to be sharp like a knife going through a held sheet of Paper.

I picked up a couple of these as stocking stuffers at Christmas and couldn't resist getting one for myself as well. I cut open a lot of stuff at work, and box cutters seem to disappear off my desk or get buried under whatever papers I have around.

This is a nice little cutter. I do find that I have to adjust how it cut open boxes with it thought, since the top is rounded. I can't just start cutting in the middle of a strip of tape. I need to start at an edge and work from there unless I want to work hard to get a hole started. It is a minor adjustment, and not really that big of a deal.

The magnet is a nice touch, although not particularly strong. Still, it is enough to hold its own weight without falling. There of plenty of metal surfaces around that I can stick it to where it won't get buried.

Also, the spring mechanism is fun to play with. It is nice that it retracts automatically so you won't accidentally snap the blade or anything like that (if you want one that stays open, slice makes one that doesn't auto retract - just look for the one with the orange slider).

Love this thing. With the retractable blade, we keep it in a kitchen drawer without worrying about rummaging for it and getting cut. Opens all my boxes in the house now.

Update April 2019
This thing is still going strong, despite lots of times someone dropped it off the counter to the floor. I noticed some review complaining that it won't cut cardboard. If it did, it wouldn't be what I wanted. I have plenty of box cutters, but with those you risk cutting what's in the box. Look at square boxes on grocery store shelves, hardware stores, etc. You'll often find them with a slice through the packaging, because someone opened the cardboard box with a box cutter. With this thing, the ceramic tip sticks out just enough to cut through the packing tape without worrying about cutting what's inside. If you order lots of stuff from Amazon, this is the tool you need.
I've written less than 30 reviews on Amazon over a 10+ year period, and I've never received any samples in exchange for writing a review.

This thing is perfect for opening boxes, and it seems MUCH safer than the traditional box cutters that I used to use. I lightly pushed the blade against my thumb to test it; it didn't cut me, so I'm a little less worried about what would happen if my toddler somehow gets a hold of this.

I buy a lot of pantry items and toddler items from Amazon, and I'm in the process of moving, so I have a lot of boxes to open up and then break down for recycling. I gave one to my mom who shops online a lot, and she asked me to send her a second one so she could keep one on each floor.

It's magnetic, which makes it easy to store on the side of the fridge. Many exterior doors also have magnetic frames, and the corners of most walls are magnetic. If you want to hang it elsewhere, just attach a magnet to the wall at that location.
