As others have stated, if you aren't careful, your Kindle will fall out of the case.
The Origami Case doesn't latch securely to the Kindle. It's held in place by magnets. This provides a quick way to "attach" and "detach" the case.
As long as you pick up the Kindle while holding both the Kindle and the case in your hand, you will be fine.
If you try to pick up the whole thing by just holding the case while in kickstand mode, you may be fine as long as you don't allow the Kindle to face downward. After doing so several times, I have yet to pick up the Kindle by the case in kickstand mode and observe the case come undone (i.e. flatten out). YMMV!
If you try to pick up the whole thing by just holding the case, and you allow the Kindle to face downward, it may not immediately fall. However, any quick movement in this orientation will definitely cause the Kindle to fall.
The Origami Case works well as a kick stand and does protect the screen when you fold it over.
Note that the case covers the rear facing camera. To use the rear facing camera while the case is attached, you can slide the Kindle upward. The Kindle will then align to a different set of magnets. I do worry about doing this as this may scratch the back of the Kindle over time.
The other option of course is to detach the case and then use the camera. ;-)
I also have the Fire Keyboard. The case holds the keyboard in place with magnets as well.
#### Should you buy this case? ####
I like the case and plan to keep it. It's not the cheapest but OEM cases usually aren't cheap. It's definitely a cool case.
I'm confident that I will be able to safely use the case. I'll just have to make sure that other users of my Kindle are aware of the entire unit's suicide design. :-) Beware of handing this thing to a young child though.
I've had my 4th Gen Amazon Fire HDX 8.9 for about a year. I originally bought it with the Otter extra heavy duty case which made it way too bulky and heavy, and I actually found that I preferred the lighter weight and grip feel of the tablet without the case, so I tossed the expensive case. Since, I've been wanting a stand for the tablet and came across the Origami case at a bargain price. I like how the tablet snaps right in. It feel well secured, but I'm pretty sure it'll pop right out from a fall. I also like that I can place my Amazon stylus pen on the cover. I can not protect the face with a cover too. The power and volume buttons align just right. Though the Origami stand is a little awkward, it gets the job done, so I really can't complain. It's made the tablet slightly heavier (not like the Otter) for what is otherwise a really light tablet, but I can simply just snap it right out of the case quickly without having to go to a major disarmament like the Fort Knox Otter case.
I'm not exactly sure what everyone is complaining about with their tablets not fitting, though I suspect their may be a difference between the "Kindle Fire" and the "Fire". I believe these are two different models and their specs must be off, so that might be what's happening.
In summary, I recommend this case if you're looking for a stand and a bit more protection over just having it out of the case. Though I doubt it's gonna be much help from a major fall.
I have a small Fire HDX and a large Fire HDX for years and still struggle to fold the case correctly. That said, once it is folded it works great. I like the ability to view the screen in both portrait and landscape positions. Plus, In portrait, I can turn the stand completely over to lower the viewing angle, I just have to remember that the volume controls are upside down.
Some positives are:
1) Kindle goes to sleep when the magnetic cover is closed.
2) The rear camera lens is covered by the case so you have to slide the Kindle up to expose it. When it is in the right position the magnets lock it in place and the camera app is automatically activated so you are ready to take pictures. This saves so much time searching for the camera app.
If you have this or any other Kindle, the Origami cases are the only way to go.
Ok, so I was attracted by a $79, 7" Kindle Fire Special on the Prime Day Special Sale, but somehow wound up with buying a $489 Fire HDX 8.9" HDX 64 GB :-) After spending that kind of money I was too cheap to spring for the case. But as I have learned to really enjoy my Kindle Fire HDX I figured I should invest in protecting it.
I like the case and for my purposes (my Kindle Fire never leaves my bedside) it provides all the protection I need. I really do like it and find that using my Kindle Fire while it is in the case while holding it is a positive. Easy to access the controls and it gives a more secure grip when using my Kindle Fire while holding it, the stand function and dust clearing function of the case while closed are added pluses.
I chose the black color and when closed it is a handsome object.
Overall a fine and functional product of brilliant design. I would like it a lot more if it were not over-priced IMHO.
A great case for every day use. A lot of reviews claim the kindle doesn't stay in it. I don't know what people are doing with it. You can't play football with it. It isn't made for combat. But for every day use it works very well and stays in just fine. It is quick and easy to open and close. It protects the kindle well. It also turns the kindle on and shuts off with the opening and closing of the cover, which is convenient.
I had gotten one earlier this year for my wife's kindle, and went right away to it again for my own new kindle.
Amazon sent me a "roocase" by mistake and I tried it out briefly. I sent it back right away. Similar in concept, but doesn't protect the camera lens, and was so thin and flimsy it wouldn't stand up.
I only wish they had other colors without having to buy the leather version. I'm just worried the leather one wouldn't hold up as well, so I avoided it.

I had an older HD and upgraded to the HDX. This was one of those "you can bundle" ideas though I know you really save nothing. I got it. When it arrived, along with the HDX, I thought it really wouldn't do much. It doesn't snap in, it's not hardcore feeling, it felt weak.
After a couple of days with it, I like it. A lot. I feel it's very protective. The HDX has never fallen out nor has it felt in any way compromised. The flap closes over very solidly. The best thing? You can power on/off and do volume up/down from the back indents.
I have no complaints. I have been through a lot of covers over the years from the Otterbox to more stylish leather ones and I am enjoying this one more. I think the Kindle is very sturdy, I've actually dropped mine (the HD) several times with no damage but that aside, this is about all I could ask for from a cover. Bonus that it is really easy to take on/off and it isn't in the least bit obtrusive.
This is my second Fire Hdx-Origami combination. I also have a Samsung tablet with a case that folds flat or into a wedge to elevate the tablet. The origami case folds into place and remains locked in position. The advantage is that the Fire stays in position in my lap whether holding my tablet in vertical.or horizontal position-- without having to hold the case with my hands. I haven't dropped my new Fire yet, but I did drop my 2nd generation Fire a few times over the years with no apparent consequences to the Fire-- what can I say, gravity happens😏. I must admit that folding the little triangle into a new case is cumbersome. The design of sliding the Fire partially out of the case for using the camera is awkward, but doable and provides effective protection for the camera. The inside of the case can accumulate dirt, but can be wiped clean.
The IMPORTANT thing is to order the RIGHT case for your GENERATION Kindle. I ordered the wrong origami case and my kindle did not fit, the reaction was similar to polar opposite magnets, it repelled the kindle. The CORRECT generation origami case holds the Kindle perfectly and the On/Off mechanism works perfectly. I have a Generation 4 Kindle and the correct generation case - perfect fit. If your case does not work - you have the wrong match for your Kindle.
This is a must buy, for the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9! Origami Case holds the Kindle, either vertical or horizontal! Once the Kindle is attached, to the case, all you have to do is close the case and it turns off the Kindle & turns it on when opening! Has a great feel to the fingers, gripping surface! The case is and excellent protection cover too!
I am not sure why so many people are having problems with these unless there is a quality control problem at the factory.
I upgraded from the 7" version of this tablet with the origami case. Both cases were great, both use magnets to hold in the tablet.
The 8.9" does feel like it has slightly less "hold", but still unless you were to pick it up very fast/hard by just the lid I do not see how the tablet could fall out. I do agree that sliding the tablet up to take a picture makes me feel a bit nervous, but I would never use this to take pictures anyways, so that is not a concern for me.
The buttons work great, the speakers sound great with the way they are recessed in the top.
