Gate Labs Camera Smart Lock, Satin Nickel

My husband and I purchased the Gate lock to replace our Kwikset digital deadbolt. With our old lock we had to use tools to open it up each time we needed to change codes for our dog walker and short term rental guests. Also, our previous lock had buttons that shared numbers- i.e 1 and 2, 3 and 4 and so on- this made creating new, unique codes more difficult. Being able to quickly change codes on our phones has relieved so much stress! We also go rid of our Ring doorbell, no need for that now! The set up and installation of the Gate lock was very straight forward, with step by step videos on the app. The lock fit our door perfectly and was functioning seconds after install. Since its been on our door we have been checking the videos which show us that our dog walker is not only showing up, but we can ensure the length of the walk by seeing what time she picks up our pup and drops him back off. 10/10 would recommend!

I had been looking for a smart lock for a while and stumbled upon Gate. But there were not enough reviews about it, so I was a bit suspicious. Since there were no other locks with an integrated camera I decided to give it a try anyway. The installation was simple enough and its been working well since. I don't use the app much yet, but I did have the chance to use the two way audio feature and thought that was pretty awesome. Being able to use codes to open the door is definitely super convenient, especially when we come back home with hands full of grocery bags. We also had family over and assigned guest codes to them which saved both parties a lot of hassle. I'm glad that we dont have to worry about sharing or hiding keys anymore!

I bought this smart lock for my outer security door at home. I've had a Schlage keypad door lock in the past and really liked not having to have a key. The Gate lock is a step up from that because it has a camera and app. We initially had some problems with notifications coming slowly because the door is metal and I guess that isn't good for wifi, but I read something online about the black rubber things that come with it. Since we added those, we've gotten nearly instant notifications. I love having a smart lock because my elderly parents live with us and they don't have to carry a key, and if they leave the house while I'm at work, I know. My daughter frequently gets packages so it's been great to see them being delivered. Overall really happy with this lock and can't wait for more features to be added!

This is my first attempt at installing & using an internet connected home device. The installation only took about 15 minutes. Once you download the app, it walks you through each step of installing the Gate smart lock into your door. The only minor delay was due to the WiFi connection part of the installation. However, I say it is minor because it connected on the second chance (could've just been a password error). My door was just the right size for the lock, so I did not need to use any spacers.

The app seems to work great in my initial testing. It is easy to see the video, talk to whomever is at the door, lock/unlock the device, and add additional access for people.

I really like the old-school key backup for this unit and think it is a great feature. I also like how easy it is to lock/unlock manually from inside.

One suggestion to Gate would be to offer different colors/finishes in the future (it doesn't match my old/existing hardware).

My favorite part of the lock is the ability to use the keypad to enter, and the ability to give others access. Originally, I got Gate because I wanted to use it on my apartment door but I realized I have a mortise lock (not compatible!). Instead, I put it on my lab door at work because my boss keeps stealing my dry erase markers.

Installation was very simple. The lock hole for the door was deeper than a normal household door, but Gate support let me know that I can twist the internal part of the lock to extend it. After that, it was very simple to screw all the parts together - all you need is a screwdriver. Setup is very easy on the app too! I just had to follow all the prompts (which also lead me through the installation) to set up an account, security code, and Wi-Fi. One thing I noticed is the Wi-Fi reception was poor for me, because my door is metal. The Wi-Fi signal was perfectly fine before I put it on the door, so it should be great for a normal door.

Since I use this for work now, it’s actually come in handy quite a bit. Each person who needs access to the lab can have their own code. The motion detector records the office activity in case anything comes up and everyone likes the extra bit of security. I hope one day I live somewhere that I can install a Gate on, but for now I’m enjoying my Gate at work! Maybe they’ll make a mortise lock next.

Description

Gate is the world’s first camera equipped smart lock. This all-in-one device includes a doorbell, a motion-activated camera, two-way audio, an LED keypad, built in Wi-Fi…all powered with the included, rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

We recently purchased the Gate Smart Lock to replace a Schlage Keypad Lock due to super short battery life (which just became a pain). We also needed better front door monitoring and security - which Gate offers. Gate is pricier if you are looking at it as a lock only but when you factor in the Video Monitoring and Remote Access capabilities - it is a great value (it’s awesome knowing who is coming and going with video recording). Instead of buying several different products we only had to buy Gate. The design is sleek (wish it came in different colors) and was fairly straightforward to install (only took a few cuss words) - I was relieved that it only took a screwdriver to replace our existing lock. So far we are loving our new Gate lock, especially getting push notifications when our children arrive home safe gives us peace of mind. When it comes to front door monitoring it’s hard to beat this all in one device.

I've had this lock for a few days now and I love it. It does everything I hoped it would do: remote lock and unlock, create key codes, and has a camera. The camera is my favorite part of the lock! I feel safe and secure with remote eyes on my front door. I was able to let housecleaners in while I was at work. That has to be the best feature. The installation process was very easy, About 20 mins to install including time I spent figuring out how to remove my old lock. I think I will get one for my backdoor as well!

I've had this lock for a few weeks and installed it on my front door. It’s been a pretty nice experience so far. Here’s an overview of what I’ve found:

Pros:
-Everything’s self-contained. You don’t need to buy any additional hardware - everything comes in the package. It even comes with a screwdriver.
-I don’t need to worry about cables. The battery is rechargeable so I don’t have to keep buying more batteries.
-The camera integration is a huge benefit to me. I really like to know who’s coming by the house and to have a record of package deliveries.
-The installation was pretty quick. It took me about 15 minutes to set everything up. There aren’t any printed instructions, so you’ll have to download the app. It’s pretty lightweight though.

Cons:

-Not sure how the battery is going to pan out, so make sure you keep the key with you as a backup.

-No home assistant / smart home integration, which I think might be useful for some. Not a big factor for me since I don’t have that set up anyway. I just needed a better way of managing package deliveries.

-The motion sensor can act up at times and trigger some notifications on my phone even when someone isn’t there. So far it hasn’t happened too often though.

Overall it functions well and does what I need it to do. It feels pretty sturdy and has a physical key backup, so I’m not losing out on anything. I can let people in remotely, and I don’t have to deal with missed packages anymore as long as the delivery person knows what’s going on.

We are a big family of 7, my parents live with us. We have 2 nannies for 2 kids, a cleaner and a cook. My wife and I are working full time, so we are never home and we created 4 key copies we shared amount our helpers. We started looking for a simpler home access sharing solution after one of our nannies got locked out with our baby and the second nanny was 2 hours away. We really liked Gate, because it has a camera and we can see our little munchkins every time they come home, it is so rewarding and in the same time relieving to see our babies safe and sound. We created key codes for all of our helpers, so they don’t need keys anymore. My parents are mostly traveling, but whenever they are home, they also don’t like to carry keys around, so now we will just create codes for them and they will be able to get into the house without any problem.  Love the lock so far. One request is to add night vision. We have a porch light, but would be great to have HD night vision camera on the lock. Please consider it for your next version.

I was so excited when this came that I snapped a quick photo to document the arrival. After a very frustrating year of replacing and replacing and replacing Vivint's (security company) smart lock on my Airbnb appartment I decided to replace it with the Gate. It's only been a few weeks but so far so good! My old lock didn't have the camera and I'm finding an extra level of security with it. Being able to set codes with the app is easier than having to deal with doing it manually like my "old school" lockbox. I'm not the early-adopter type so I'm a bit new to the connected world, but so far so good!
