Zombicide Black Plague is a great board game, with simple rules that can be learned in half an hour, fast moving play, tension-filled in-game situations, tactical and strategic challenges, and a true cooperative play experience. For those with experience with the original Zombicide, note that Black Plague is a different experience in that your characters are less victims trying to survive a zombie apocalypse than skilled and equipped heroes who are fighting back against the zombie horde. Everyone starts out with a viable weapon, and the equipment just gets better from there after a few searches. There is plenty of zombie hack and slash in this game. In the course of a single quest, high dozens to hundreds of zombies will be slaughtered as these heroes valiantly strive to push back the undead tide. And yet that might not enough for most of the scenarios. The character's abilities will have to be used to the utmost in combination with a well-thought out plan of attack for the particular challenge of each quest if the characters are to overcome both the unrelenting horde and fickle fate (i.e. die rolls and card draws). The game materials are of very good quality. The game board tiles beautifully evoke a medieval setting, and there are multiple varieties of miniatures for each zombie type. Set up and tear down is not too bad, averaging 10-15 minutes each for one to two people, and probably less with more help. All in all this game provides a fun, challenging, and immersive experience for those who enjoy fantasy/medieval themes, the zombie apocalypse genre, or both. If there's a downside, it is that there's no character progression from scenario to scenario. The characters go through the full power progression each and every quest, just like regular Zombicide. Oh well, there's always Massive Darkness to look forward to.
So I was staring at this game sitting in my wish list for months. I knew I was interested, I had heard it was a good game, but I didn't know if I wanted to spend that much (I'm cheap). It went on sale and I couldn't be any more glad that I finally pulled the trigger. The design quality of this game is fantastic. The miniatures are so good that I'm tempted to try painting them (god help us all). They even give you a diagram so you don't forget how to put the miniatures back! ....Let me repeat that....they give you a diagram.
The game itself is a lot of fun, and much easier to learn and play then you may first believe. The rule book is pretty thick, but don't be scared. You know why the rule book it thick? It's because they break it up with large text, helpful notes, and fun illustrations. I learned how to play in about a half-hour, and was teaching other people the next day. The rules make sense, the turns move pretty cleanly, the game gets progressively more challenging the further in you get, and is very easy if you wanted to build your own adventures. It's worth adding to your collection.
The fact that this isn’t a post-apocalyptic modern times, Walking Dead rip off like every other zombie thing ever is what caught my attention.
And I’m loving it.
If you enjoy the theme and Fantasy Flight style PvE miniature board games this is right up your alley.
The rules are relatively simple and straight forward, the minis themselves are well made, and the gameplay is a good mix of fun/fast-paced and challenging and is neither too easy or too hard.
My only complaints are as follows:
1. Like with FFG there are some rule specifics that aren’t 100% clear and you’ll have to hit the internet for clarification.
2. The base game comes with one necromancer and one abomination yet features cards that want you to bring in more. This isn’t a big deal as the rules can be changed to account for this but still...the fact that additional necromancers and abominations are hard to find (for reasonable prices) isn’t fun either.
3. If you end up liking this game and are the type who wants to collect everything associated with it that will be challenging without spending hundreds of dollars. I guess this was a kickstarter thing a few years ago and since then most of the content aside from the core box and expansion boxes either never went retail or did and haven’t been reprinted yet (if they ever will be). Special Guest hero boxes, additional enemy boxes, etc are out there but can range from being normal, fair retail price to being double, triple, or even quadruple their original cost.
this is SUCH a fun game! 1 person up to 6 people can have hours of fun with this! every time you play its a whole new adventure!
our family has game night every night now b/c of how much fun we have with this game!
the rules are fair and easy to follow, the rule books does a great job of answering all the questions that come up, the miniatures are sturdy and made with amazing detail, the cards and cardstock are good quality, very happy with this purchase!
Fantastic board game, and a good croasover for taboetop wargamers looking to get into more traditional board games and board gamers who want to see if they like tabletop wargames alike. The components are top rate- LOTS of really well sculpted (albeit stylized) miniatures. I have purchased nearly all of the expansions and optional buys for the game and look forward to CMON releasing more. This will also cross over with their upcoming Massive Darkness dungeon crawl game (with a $8- $10 separate crossover pack). Gameplay is fun and not complex. I wasnt sure how fun a game like this (being co-op) wpuld be, but after playing over a dozen times its still very fun every time, whether with 2 players or 4 (I have not yet tried a aolo game). Im very happy with this and will try other games by CMON after my experience with this.

Description
Zombicide: Black Plague is a standalone cooperative board game for 1-6 players that brings the relentless zombie-killing action of Zombicide into a brand new fantasy setting! Players control a party of survivors as they fight to rid the land of an invasion of zombies controlled by the game itself. Survivors find weapons, learn spells, battle zombies, and gain experience. The more experienced they get, the more powerful they become, but the more the zombies rise to face them.
Zombicide is, by far, my favorite board game of all time. It is a cooperative game, but you still have the option of screwing your friends over to save yourself if you really want. It not only allows, but urges you to slay hordes of zombies by the dozens. Plus, I like Black Plague way more than other Zombicides because it I like the fantasy setting of using bows, swords, and spells. There is also a good variety of spells that let you play in other ways beyond just trying to kill your way through.
Another bonus of Zombicide is that it has infinite replayability. There are several campaigns, but you can easily create your own, and there are a lot of expansions and additional characters you can get.
If you like zombies andwant to test your strategic survival skills in hand to hand combat in a medieval fantasy setting then buy this game. Invite your friends over and have a great time. The mechanics and balance of this game are great. The different player powers keep the game exciting and different. The components are made for the long haul and will last a good amount of time. I painted my miniatures and the details are great for painting. If you ever wear out the base game there are multiple expansions to add on and give you even more replayability and difficulty. Must have for zombie gamers.
Easily went from being a game I had never heard of to one of the best I've ever played. The satisfaction factor in this game is extremely high as you level up your character and take down zombie hoards.
There's a real sense of danger too. Even your most seasoned veteran's can get overwhelmed by a little back luck on the board's turn and some poor positioning.
The game seems like it would scale well with more people, but I think the game is most fun when each player is controlling 2+ characters so that you have more options each turn. With only the base 6 characters in this game, I'd say this is best for 2-3 players. If you get expansion characters, then definitely you can scale higher. There are specific rules in place to make sure that the game's difficulty scales with the number of characters being controlled.
Love it! Bought this game during an Amazon sale, based on the reviews it had received. The concept seemed very fun, and proved so during our first playthrough!
We played 3 people, each controlling 2 survivors. I do wish there was a built in method of keeping players in the game if their survivor dies - as it stands, that player is eliminated from the game and must watch. There are a couple ways that people have come up with to put players back in the game, and I'm sure we will create house rules to accommodate.
This is sure to be a star at our game nights! I will be looking at the expansions!
Easily the most fun I've had playing a board game, and my wife and I have a wall of games to compare them to. If you are worried it won't have enough for the price, you will be relieved to see how huge the board is along with just how many zombie miniatures you get, each very detailed in their look. The little mini-boards used to track character progression makes leveling up and tracking your characters a breeze.
Highly recommended to players who enjoy co-op games that involve lots of strategy and even a bit of luck. Also recommended to those who play D&D.
