Ring Alarm Keypad

After doing a bunch of research on alarm systems I chose Ring, and I'm glad I did! And here's why. While the alarm system is still very new it has so many ways that it can expand, It has multiple ways to communicate with other smart home devices. Z-wave, Wifi, cellular and I believe Bluetooth. I would imagine it's just a matter of time where Ring will be able to lock all your smart door locks once the system is armed, Or if the smoke alarm goes off unlock all those doors. Another comforting thing for me is the company has been around for a while with its ring doorbells. we have all seen the "Alexa show me the front door" Commercials right? What you might not know is Ring has been purchased by Amazon and is ramping up its product line. ok back to the alarm! I love the instant alerts I get on my phone! I'm talking as soon as the alarm is tripped, armed, or disarmed 'I'm notified within a second at most three. The System uses Z-wave technology to communicate with all its sensors and even comes with a repeater. though I doubt most will even need it. There are only a few things about this alarm that I Don't care for and one of my issues has already been addressed, and Ring is Already coming out with a solution! Ok, The First thing I don't care for is the door chime only sounds from the Ring base and not the keypad. if you have a large home and the base is set up on one side of the house or in a closed room you might not be able to here when a door is opened. The keypad says things like "Home and armed" does its typical countdown beep when you come home to let you know the system is armed u need to disarm it. Another issue I had with the alarm is the actual siren, It's built into the base station and in a large home it sounds a little louder then a smoke detector, they are releasing an additional siren that I plan on adding onto the system once it's available the keypads also sound their own sirens, But I want the neighbors down the block to hear it! ha ha.

I love the alarm system and I do like the keypad, but it has a couple of issues. One is using a USB mini connector for power. It works for quite a while on batter, but lights don't stay lit to indicate alarm on or off condition when on battery only. Adding power in a permanent install is a pain because of the cable. It's almost impossible to hide it. The other issue is the power light. It is totally unnecessary. System armed or disarmed lights will tell you it has power. The light is extremely bright and green, which adds to confusion as to if the system is armed or disarmed as green usually means disarmed for people not familiar with it. I wound up putting white electrical tape over it to make it disappear.

My initial purchase was the Ring Alarm System and we felt we needed a second keypad within the house. After the initial system was installed and configured, adding this second keypad was a no brainer! It took me longer to open the box, than it did to add it to my system, mount it and rename it! It's that easy to do! Don't think twice, if you feel you need a second keypad, order it right away! I can't say enough positives about this Ring Alarm system... highly recommended!

I consider myself a techie - I have Alexa, Google Nest Product, CCTV cameras, raspberry pis and have worked for a couple of the large tech companies in my time. I had an existing 'legacy' alarm system in place with a decrepit console and rudimentary functionality in place. As I was having a few windows and door installed I needed to have the system upgraded and received quotes from my existing alarm company and an additional couple of companies. Huge upfront costs and then $50/month monitoring after that - additional if I wanted phone support. I looked at alternatives and, having a Ring Doorbell, I decided to go Ring. Had the whole house protected within a few hours of work (I'm not a handyman) - and, although it's only been a week or so, I'm very happy with the interface and functionality - compared with the alternatives, it's a no-brainer and will pay for itself (compared with the other options) within a month. A definite disruption in the home security market.

I, like most people who bought the Ring system because of the ability to have multiple keypads and stay wireless, needed a second keypad at another main entry door.

I was happy to see the device was nearly fully charged out of the box & was easily installed like the first one.

App setup was a breeze and was on the network in just seconds.

Great, inexpensive system. Easy to setup. I totally advocate this system.

We love our whole ring system but since this is just for the keypad I’ll focus on that.

This is super easy to install or even not install. It’s made to be portable or to install on a wall. We have 2 - one mounted and 1 that’s not. I initially feared the key pad would always show a light.

Mounting is super easy and involves two screws. The key pad just slides easily into and out of the mounting plate.

If you don’t mount it you can flip the mounting plate around to make a stand. We don’t even bother with this.

I hate having any sort of lights on when I’m sleeping so was pleased that the lights go off after you activate/deactivate. We charged it up about 2 months ago and haven’t had to recharge yet (they’re not even half way used).

They install/connect to the ring system effortlessly. The app walks you through every step easily.

Buttons are easy to see and comfortable.

**Update: After this review Ring reached out to me and provided a firmware fix. I will update this review if the issue reoccurs. I have updated my rating from 2 to 5 due to the support Ring has provided.

Both my keypads are locking up every month or so. Ring informed me this is because the keypads are not designed to be plugged in all the time and will lockup and not reboot if kept powered from the USB port. This has caused my children to set off the alarm and be unable to turn it off. Ring does not document this as a requirement and there are features lost when not actively powered. Ring is taking too long to address this.

I am keeping two stars because Rings product is great and the support is first class, if the bug resolution was timely this would be a six star review.

If most of the occupants of your house use cell phones, there is really no reason to have more than one of these. Connection and use is easy, but arming and disarm8ng with your phone is easier than remembering the code after you run to the keypad.

System works great, installed 8 sensors and 2 key pads. Only problem is the 3M tape made from thin butyl rubber. Had to replace the front door tape with Scotch foam double stick tape which is 3 X thicker and sticks like crazy. Sensor fell off after first day with 3M tape. Otherwise all is well. This is not a bad thing and I have used 3M on many other projects and really like it. But front door gets used frequently and sometime people slam it.
