My husband and I bought our first home, which needed remodeling. We were on a tight budget so we wanted a hood vent that was powerful and quiet for the price. After having done some research on which hood vent I wanted, I settled on this one.
Must know Installation Info:
*this is the hood only, no damper, no vent shaft
*my husband said install was easy, just reconnect the electric components, apply damper, apply vent, secure in place (any "handyman" should be able to do this)
**we bought a 7inch damper from Lowes, costs around $10 (we live in California)
Now that we've gotten to use this hood, here's what I think:
*Adequate lighting - I can see what I'm doing which is important
*Fan: Low is quiet and is the most used (especially if you turn it on right away), High is loud, I try to avoid using this one at all costs, it will hurt my ears after a while
*Only one vent, wish there were two.
Overall it's a good hood vent for the price, it does the job. I've inserted some pictures so you can see what it looks like installed.
This unit isn't top of the line but can't go wrong. Fewer parts to go to break down. Shape is the key. The corners don't stick out to poke you when you come around the corner. It is basic, looks good and works very well and the install is lift and push. Nice job. Thanks.
Installed the Broan 42000 series Economy vented hood today. I removed a late 80"S Nutone Economy vented hood. The vertical outlet cutout had to be moved forward approx. 1/2 inches using the new vent as the template, after removing the fan motor and marking the cutout from below through the flange. The mounting screws actually lined up with the existing holes. The wiring knockout lined up like the old vent. I am pleased so far with operation of the new vent and the appearance matches the stainless upgrade to my kitchen.
I was worried that the quality was not going to be very good as the cost was very (very) reasonable, but as it turned out- it works absolutely perfectly, and looks really nice in stainless steel. You can put an energy-efficient bulb in it, and it gives off a tremendous amount of light, much better than the funky greasy nasty old range hood that I was using previously. This has proven to be the best value of any kitchen item I have, and I appreciate using this on a daily basis... each and every day. I highly recommend this item. The seller was quick to ship. AAA+ thank you...!
The hood in the mobile home I purchased worked, but was beyond cleaning. I purchased this one as it fit perfectly in the space and it was very inexpensive. My mistake was not realizing that this unit has a seven inch exhaust but my old duct work was only five inches. I had to purchase a reducer which solved the problem. I also purchased a seven inch damper as one does not come with this range hood and didn’t want to reuse the nasty one I pulled out of the five inch duct.
The metal on this hood is pretty thin, but for the price you can’t expect heavy duty. I recommend a two person install. The unit is not heavy, but is a little awkward to hold up and try to screw it in under your cabinets. If you drop it or bump it too hard you will damage it. The mounting points can be easily damaged if the hood is not held steady while installing.
I made a pattern out of cardboard so I could cut a larger hole in the bottom of my cabinet with a jigsaw to accommodate the seven inch exhaust. I marked holes, drilled them and put screws in leaving the screws protruding so I could lift the hood up. I slid the keyholes onto the screws then tightened the screws. I had trouble holding the hood steady while tightening the screws and bent a couple of the screw keyholes in the top of the hood. After bending the keyholes back into reasonable shape, I took styrofoam from a different purchase and used it to hold the hood up. I added washers to the screws (after painting them gloss white) to give more strength to each of the four stress points were the screws go. My old hood was hard wired so I knocked out the plug in the back of the hood and ran the wire from the wall into the hood. (Prior to screwing the hood to the cabinets.) You have to remove one screw that holds the cover for the electrical components. Remove that cover, make your connections and put the cover back on. If you have an electrical outlet your need to plug into then you can just wire in a power cord rather than hard wiring the unit.
The hood came with four short screws to screw it to your cabinets. I had to come up with longer screws because these would be much too short. Mobile home remember? My cabinets are particle board including the bottom. Under the bottom there is a half inch of open space and then a layer of sheet rock. My screws needed to go through the sheet rock, through the open space and into the particle board. If you have nice cabinets made out of actual wood then the short screws should work for you just fine, but if you have nice cabinets you probably won’t be choosing this budget range hood.
I’ve got the hood up and running. Some say it is loud when the fan is on high, but it’s a fact that my old fan was louder. (Mobil home. Built on the cheap.) I put a nice bright LED bulb in rather than that old incandescent bulb. My installation is low enough that you do not see underneath the hood at all. If I do look under there it looks much like the nasty old hood it replaced – just clean.
My hood arrived in pristine condition, but I can understand why so many people end up with dinged or damaged hoods. This is very light thin metal that will take damage easily. The install can be done alone, but would be easier with two people. A couple of the front seams on either end do shed a little light when I turn it on, but I wouldn’t have noticed it if I hadn’t read about it in another review and it’s only noticeable if I have the hood light on with the kitchen lights off. A dab or two of caulk or a piece of tape will fix that. It’s in a spot underneath where you’ll never see the tape anyway.
The front face of my cabinets hang down almost an eighth of an inch lower than the rest of the bottom of the cabinets so even though the front of the hood fits tight and flush to the cabinets, I do have this minor crack of a space between the hood and the cabinet bottom on the sides. Caulk it. I am happy with the hood. It looks much nicer than the ancient one it replaced and works great.
I got this bad boy for only $40 although the price does fluctuate.

Very easy to install and exceeded all expectations !
Basic minimalist range hood in stainless steel. Stainless skin is very lightweight and flimsy. The switch controls for the fan and light were backwards so I reversed them which makes the fan HI/LOW label backwards. Low is on the left side, High is on the right side now. At least I can operate it without having to read the label. I had to remove the light switch and turn it over to make it work the right way. The switches used on this model are very available from many suppliers so if they ever go bad it should be easy to find replacements. The aluminum mesh filter may be harder to find, It measures 8-3/4 x 10-1/2", about 1/8" thick.
Looks great in our modern kitchen. However, it didn't come with a damper and I didn't know to order one. So, a last-minute run by my contractor was required. The orange hardware store didn't carry the 7-inch damper, but the blue one did. It was only $10. So all in all, our new hood was a good deal.
If your home has a 7 inch round duct, this is a perfect fit. Just buy the damper, it slides right on top of the hood. I found that local big box stores had none of these smaller units with a round duct fitting. Only the 200$ units had a conversion piece for the round duct in stainless steel. I bought one only to return it because the expensive ones are too deep, it stuck way too far out. This is a great, inexpensive alternative for those who need stainless steel and a round duct. I noticed spaces between the metal panels where light would shine through at the joint. I caulked them from the bottom and it's fine. Most people wouldn't even care.
Just received this last Friday & my son installed it yesterday. Looks great & works great! Very good quality...definitely recommend it. It was cheaper thru Amazon than at Lowe's & faster delivery!
