Amazon USB Adapter for Fire Tablets (4th Generation)

This product is titled Amazon USB Adapter for Fire Tablets (4th Generation). And indeed it works, sort of...First a big shout out to Amazon, pack some instructions with the cable, it will greatly simplify things for the end user.

So, I have a Fire Tablet 4th gen. I plug the cable into my Fire HD and plug a USB thumb drive into the adapter. To play a video, it is simple. As another reviewer described, tap Videos, tap the menu icon (three bars at the upper left), Tap Personal Videos, and you should see the videos on the drive. Worked great.

For music, I used File Expert HD to find the file and play it using VidOn (free). It would not play using Amazon Music.

Again, Amazon needs to package instructions regarding how to use this device for the product listed in the title.

I will update this review after playing with it some more.

I have a Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 64 GB (4th edition)

Issues I've ran into using this cable:
Unsupported SD Card: The file system or size of your external device is not supported.
Cannot Mount USB 3.0 FD IN13120600000000000000001
These errors were received using a PNY Turbo USB 3.0 128 GB Flash drive formatted to exFat or NTFS.
Fix: Format any Flash drive to fat32. If your flash drive is larger than 32GB you cannot format to fat 32 in windows. You must use fat32format and instructions can found here: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm

Blank SD card: SD card is blank or has unsupported filesystem.
Error given when your flash drive is formatted NTFS.
Fix: Format to fat32 if possible but you'll get the error that follows this one.

Cannot Mount fbfb
Error given when you insert a fat32 formatted flash drive using a Sandisk Cruzer 8GB and PNY Turbo USB 3.0 128 GB with a fat32 format. For some reason the Kindle thinks that the flash drive wasn't mounted when it actually was. If you install a file explorer program like File Expert HD you can copy and paste your files from the flash drive to the kindle.

I give this 5 stars because ultimately I got it to work and after doing some research the issue is not with the cable but the Fire OS. The Fire OS will read pictures, video's, Music without the use of a file explorer. Video's you have to go into your private video's. OS main screen/Video's/3 horizontal lines top left/Personal Video's. Music you click on Music/Device. Photo's you just click on Photo's though it may take a while for them to show up depending on their file size. There is no option to copy objects from the USB device to the Kindle itself without the use of a file explorer app like File Expert HD which is the one I use.

I also connected a Microsoft Xbox 360 Wired controller and a Logitech M705 wireless mouse. Both devices worked flawlessly and plugging in the mouse brought up a mouse cursor just as you get on your computer. The scroll mouse, forward + back buttons all function as they would on the computer. The only negative would be not having any settings to adjust the mouse speed or buttons on either device. Since the Kindle detected the Unifying USB dongle this may allow the Kindle to connect to multiple Logitech Unifying devices at the same time but I have not been able to test it since I don't have another device. I will try more devices later as I come across them but the main reason I purchased this was to be able to use a flash drive in order to carry more files with me on trips without a laptop and this allows me to do that.

I bought this to allow my son to watch movies on his Kindle Fire in the car when we are not on WiFi. I actually upgraded his Kindle Fire (now just called Fire) to the 4th Generation partly to use this adapter. His old Kindle Fire was only 8 GB and could only download about 1 movie at a time for offline viewing. This is the one we have http://www.amazon.com/Fire-HD-Display-Wi-Fi-16/dp/B00IKPW0UA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434802996&sr=8-1&keywords=kindle+fire+4th+generation The Kindle naming system is very confusing, so take a minute to make sure you have the right Fire before buying this.

So I used PlayLater to download my movies from a couple different places to my computer in the MP4 format. Then I copied to a 16 GB usb drive. Then I plugged USB drive into the Fire using the adapter and now we have about 9 or 10 hours of movies available offline for our road trip. I had read from another review that it will only recognize a usb drive that is the size as your internal memory. I did not test this out with anything higher, but I can say the 16 GB drive works in my 16 GB Fire.

I bought this adapter to get my camera photos to Facebook or email them to friends while on the go. It will do that. I plugged the USB adapter that came with the camera into the camera and then into this adapter and into my Kindle Fire HD 7 (4th generation). One Camera I used was a Pentax point & shoot Optio A30.

Find the photos on the camera's SD memory by the following. From home, select 'Photos', then the lines thingy at the upper left; that should show a list of of options, select 'Device'. The name of the photos folder should appear among others. Tap on the box with the name and photos will show up.

Tap on a pic, do any editing, select share and fill in what is necessary, send.

Works the same way with a Kodak 50-in-one card reader.

With a Canon T2i DSLR, connect all the cables, turn on Kindle, then turn on camera. The app 'Photo Importer' will start on the Kindle, allowing transfer of one selected or all.

I bought this to get the most out of my Kindle Fire HDX. I had to go out of town for work and I needed to be able to access and edit various documents. This worked like a charm! I plugged it in and was able to access everything. I have the office suite on my Kindle so I opened that and then went to open a document. The flash drive showed up with all my documents I could open. I haven't had any issues. I haven't tried transferring music or photos but that's not what I got it for. If you want an easy way to be able to access documents and share documents with others by using a flash drive, this will do it.

Great add on which works as described. I have a 4th generation Kindle Fire HD 6 with 8G memory. This adapter allows me to view movies, photos and listen to music all offline and without using the internal memory on my Fire. Since there are no instructions and after reviewing all the comments about this product I was still a bit confused. So, there's what works for me.

I'm using a mini 32GB HP v165w USB Flash Drive available from Amazon for about $12. I formatted this drive as a fat32 with my Windows 8.1 computer. Then I created three folders on the drive - Video, Photos and Music. From my PC, I downloaded MP4 formatted movies into the Video folder, jpg formatted photos into the Photo folder and mp3 music files into the Music folder.

I downloaded the free ES Explorer app and VidOn Player HD app as suggested in other reviews. I plugged in the adapter and turned on the Kindle Fire. To access anything on the USB flash drive I open the ES Explorer app then tap on the three bars in the upper left corner of the screen. Tap on the local tab and select the usbotg tab. This opens to show the folders on the USB flash drive (Video, Photos and Music). There is also a LOST.DIR folder and a System Volume folder which were added by the system. I have no idea why they were created.

If I tap on the Video folder I have listed all my movie files. If I tap on a particular movie I'm asked to select ES Media Player or Photos or VidOn Player HD. At the bottom of the selection is a “Set as the default app” check box. If you check this box it uses the player you selected. I've found the VidOn Player works best for me.

The Music and Photo tabs work the same as the Video tab. On the Music tab I prefer the VidOn Player and in the Photo tab I prefer the ES Media Player.
Occasionally switching from on tab to another the Fire freezes and requires a reboot but a small price to pay for the added flexibility.

I like using the mini USB flash drive, since it takes up less space and isn't as bulky. I would hope the next generation Fire has a standard USB port. Also I would guess the cheaper $7 Cable Matters® (2-Pack) Micro-USB 2.0 On-The-Go (OTG) Adapter at Amazon would work as well since the Fire recognizes the drive as an otgusb.

I’m planning a trip to Europe and want to upload my photos daily to avoid losing them if my camera was lost or stolen. Searching the internet made it seem like it would be impossible to transfer photos from my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH24 camera to my Kindle Fire HD 7 (4th Generation) without spending a ton of money. However, using the USB adapter, camera cord, and the Photo Importer App I was able to connect the camera to the Kindle.

When connected the camera asks me to select the USB Mode. When I selected ‘PC’ it didn’t work, but when I selected ‘PictBridge(PTP)’ it worked. The Photo Importer App automatically recognizes the camera. I set the Amazon Photo App to automatically add the photos to the Amazon Cloud Drive when I import them. I also downloaded the Amazon Cloud App to my Kindle so that I can easily make sure my photos were added to the Cloud. Works perfectly, my “test” photos were on my Kindle as well as in the Cloud. The process took some time and tweaking to figure out, but I’m so glad I didn’t give up.

Works perfect. I have been able to download movies to flash drive and then play back on my kindle so not to use up my memory. The only reason I bought the new Kindle fire was that it had this adapter to extend my memory and I has done everything promised.

Adapter works perfectly. I was able to view movies from a USB thumb drive and from my 1t portable hard drive on my fire 6".

It is a good accessory for my tablets, Fire 6 HD (16GB) and the New Fire under $50.
Initially, I bought this cable for reading files from usb memory, because the Fire 6 only has 16 GB.
I tested as reading files from my usb memory 32 GB, pdf and m4a extensions. (File Expert HD app) .
Excellent for playing videos on my USB (VidOn Player HD app).
First, I locate my video with the help of FileExpert, then when opening the file, Fire OS gives me options to view the file , then I select VidOn Player app. Both apps are free.
Yesterday, after reading some questions about the product, I tried to use this cable to connect a Kensington mouse to my Fire Tablet.
It works really well.
