My 6-year-old Labrador Koda has put on a little weight and even though he’s on a quality dog food, he has terrible gas, he seems lethargic, and has loose stool. I have been slowly switching him over to Nulo by mixing increasing amounts of Nulo with his old food. So far, his stomach has tolerated the Nulo just fine. He absolutely loves the taste! He must be getting the nutrients he needs, because he is eating less. So while this dog food may seem expensive, you actually go it at a slower rate. In less than a month, my dog has lost 5 lbs and he seems more energetic.
When my Vet learned that I moved to a grain-free diet, he was not happy. He lectured my wife for about 20 minutes, citing studies against it. I don’t really know what to believe, but similar to humans with the Ketogenic (low carb) diet, you just don’t need carbs, so why put them in there as fillers?
I wrote to Nulo with my concerns and they promptly responded:
“Nulo’s dog and cat foods are formulated by a credentialed animal nutritionist (Ph.D.), who has been at the forefront of formulating commercial dog and cat foods for over 30 years. In general, dogs and cats alike thrive on a higher meat, lower carbohydrate diet. Because of this, it is Nulo's philosophy and choice to formulate our diets closer to what pets might naturally choose for themselves, as well as what their systems are best equipped to digest. Our recipes are designed with industry-leading levels of animal-based protein (meat), and no plant-protein concentrates, which means your dog on Nulo is getting a significant portion (80-85% on average) of his protein from animal sources. As carnivores, our pets have shorter digestive tracts best equipped at digesting animal-based protein sources. Grain-free formulas often (and certainly in the case of Nulo!) contain more animal-based protein and fats, with fewer carbohydrates than their grain-based counterparts. This makes Nulo more easily digestible and one of the highest protein, lowest carbohydrate pet foods on the market. It just so happens that these same qualities are also important for a healthy urinary tract and help to nourish skin and coat (to name just a few benefits).
With this said, we also agree that grains may not necessarily be bad for your pet. Grains can provide a source of trace minerals and vitamins, as well as extra fiber for pet’s requiring a little more bulk in their stools. It is simply Nulo's philosophy to provide pets with more of what their bodies need and less of what they don’t. For these reasons, we have chosen to formulate all of our recipes without the inclusion of grains.
In regards to cancer, Nulo does not make any foods that are designed to prevent or treat specific medical conditions. Pets, like people, can develop many types of cancer – each with their own unique causes and treatments. Nulo has chosen to formulate based on how our dogs and cats are designed to eat as carnivores, with more animal-based protein and NO artificial preservatives or unnecessary additives found in many other pet foods today. Our mission is to help pet parents make better choices in the nutrition that they provide to their pets, which can help set pets up for long and healthy lives. If your dog has any predisposition to certain types of cancers, we do recommend consulting your veterinarian regarding any dietary considerations that may be required for your dog as an individual.
As a small, passionate company, we feed Nulo to our own pets and we absolutely share your concern for the health and wellbeing of dogs and cats. We spend considerable resources formulating, testing, and controlling our supply chain to ensure the safety of our products so that Koda can live an active and healthy life!”
I’m so glad we found Nulo and that Amazon offers it Subscribe-n-Save.
My tubby Lab has lost 6 pounds using Nulo Grain Free Healthy Weight Dry Dog Food. Good Stuff!
I adopted a 1 year od 14 pound miniature pinscher mix a year ago. It's been 20 years since I've owned a dog. I bought him a quality dog food (after research) and fed him the amount that the bag recommended for his 14 pound weight. He gained 6 pounds and my vet warned him he had to lose weight. Gone were the multitude of treats and I switched to this brand of food. Six months later, he has lost 4 pounds and he looks great and his coat is shiny
Perfect food for my Yorkie who is prone to get pancreatitis. Very low fat. I feed this plus a probiotic and haven’t had a recurrence of the pancreatitis.
My dog has lost 7 lbs on this great kibble.
