You'll have two pieces of paper in the box with the device, one with set up instructions and another that says (essentially) "Don't use those instructions, go to this URL instead". Guess which one I didn't see?
What the instructions don't tell you: One flip of the switch in back simply restarts the device. 10 flips resets it to factory default. But 5 flips downloads new firmware (once you've connected it to WiFi) and that's the ONLY way I could get it to work. Also, you have to start from scratch once you disconnect it from power, so set it up where it will live.
But set up gripes aside, telling it to save my current gear as my "Strike Loadout" (or "Raid" or "Crucible") is awesome. There are some limitations, as you need to be in orbit or the tower for it to work (not on patrol or active mission). What I like more than anything else is that it lights up and pulsates as Ghost speaks, just like in the game.
Your probably wondering why I’m giving this such a positive review considering everyone else... understand that I only paid $9.99 for this Ghost Speaker and this is my honest opinion about it. I should mention I use this with my Amazon HD 8 Fire Tablet and it works great (no need for an true “ECHO” just and Alexa enabled device.
First off, this speaker is NOT worth it’s original price. I would have happily paid $19.99 for this, but I ended up snagging it for $9.99. The reason I feel Ghost isn’t worth his original price (and why I can understand the angry buyers for the price alone) is because it’s literally just a Ghost Speaker, nothing more. The thing is, you can just download the ghost skill for your Amazon device (Echo, Show, Amazon Fire Tablet, etc) and get the same results. For the original price, this should have been either and Amazon Alexa device like the Echo Dot or it should have been a device specifically made so you could talk directly to it and not say “Alexa, Ask Ghost for my Next Milestone.” The fact that I can’t just say “Ghost, Hello!” Is frustrating. I have to ask “Alexa” to ask/tell “Ghost” something.
That’s where the REAL nit picky bits about this ends however. The rest is fairly positive.
Honestly, I don’t understand why people had such a hard time setting Ghost up, it was a breeze and I have one of the worst internet connections. I had ZERO problems. In fact, they updated the set up instructions which if you go to the Destiny Game Website you can find (not Bungies site, but the game site itself). They must have updated it, as when I opened the box there was a note to go to the site for new set up instructions. I set him up in about 2 minutes (he only took 30 seconds to update) and then he was ready to go.
Sure the red light is awkward and bright, and SURE it could have been in the back or been a different color, but it indicates ghost is working, so it is, but weirdly, a necessity. Why they picked red, is a bit weird to me though.
Overall, I’m happy with my purchase. This was my honest opinion. Sure this could have been so much more, but it is what it is. It states exactly what it does, what it is, and what it was meant for in the description. Why anyone thought it would be anything more was just a misunderstanding on their part.
I know Bungie, EA or whoever-it-is originally charged a bunch of money for this useless piece of garbage. I got mine for $10 after all the hate over this device and the price came down. I'm just using it as a dumb little doodad that is hooked up to my AV receiver so it automatically turns on every time the receiver turns on and off every time it turns off. It makes a cool little sound when it turns on and the lights come on and stay on (and they're not too bright where I have it). So in that regard, it's perfect...I could also have it hooked up to a smart plug like TP-LINK makes and have it turn on and off on a schedule or any other device that has a USB port if I wanted to...
I know it's supposed to interface with some dumb app via Destiny and some people think the sound is too high or low and/or the app sucks. Since I don't care about any of that and will never use it. It's not worth more than $10-$15 honestly since the app and other things are so crappy so don't buy it for that. But if you want a dumb gadget that has little lights, here ya go buddy...
Not quite as cool as the original Destiny 1 Ghost where the lights glow and fade....but whatever....
Let's face it. $80 for this thing was extreme. There are a lot of cool features IF you have an Alexa device already and configure it right. I'm looking at this as just a cool collectors item. At 10-$20 it is just that. It looks nice, I would even say it could easily be painted up if you want to "apply a shader" haha. I found the plastic and general feel to be good and sturdy. It looks great with my Shaxx and Saladin figure!
Dear Bungie and amazon,
we bought Ghost so we could have our own ghost present during game play cuse why not lol, it is well made, comes with all you need to use it with your alexa device and the instructions were simple to follow; however, a stand would be great to hold it. as for the skill i have had it a bit longer than the speaker. and i got to say its a lot of fun and help. But a clear list of commands would help as well as we have all seen our ghost play music in the action trailers so it would be awesome if Ghost could play music. not asking for words i know that takes up more data in music files than just the sheet music and all the vids its just the music any way. it be way cool to just have a jam going any time i ask Ghost. also would like to be able to ask challenges and events via each planet, also it be nice if ghost would speak all the game play ghost lines im sure you would have to do a lot of work for that but how cool would that be.

Honestly, for what this is I love it. Setup was a little difficult but I got it working and it hasn't been updated for Forsaken, but It's a neat little desk toy and as a hardcore Destiny fan, I love it. If I had paid $80-$90 for it I would be upset but for $10 it's super fun and cute. I was skeptical because of all the negative reviews, but honestly I love it.
I’m not sure what all the one star reviews are about, maybe there has been a software patch. This product worked perfectly for me. It took me 10 minutes to set up yes and my echo.bot i’m not sure what all the one star reviews are about, maybe there has been a software patch. This product worked perfectly for me. It took me 10 minutes to set up yes and my echo dot total. Also the ghost’s voice volume seems fine to me but I do have it set up close to where I sit, I guess if it was all the way across the room it may be hard to hear over the game. It is a steal at $10 but seems to be the worst of the original asking price.
It is what it is. And, that is a dedicated speaker for the Destiny 2 Ghost Alexa Skill. It can be a pain to get it connected, and the instructions that come with it aren't very clear, but, that being said, once you do get it connected, it functions beautifully. It is kinda plain, being solid black, but I see this as an invitation to get out the model paint and customize Ghost to my personal taste. I am thoroughly enjoying mine, and I hope you can look past its faults and do the same.
For the price I paid, and my level of interest in the Destiny, it was pretty much worth the money. I didn’t run into any of the technical problems that other people seemed to have. Setup was straightforward and it stayed connected to my network. I had more trouble setting up Echo Buttons than I did with this. It seems to do just fine answering my questions about Destiny, and the sound comes out of the Ghost like it should. I’m not picky enough of a collector to be bothered by the quality of the plastic (but can see why someone who paid $80 would be). It doesn’t offer any explanation of the mode switch (other than its use as a reset button, which is info found on the Destiny site mentioned in the manual), which is unfortunate. It’s also kinda inconvenient that it requires a separate Alexa device for use due to lack of microphone. Given its original price, this should’ve at least been made as a bare-bones Echo Dot, if not a full blown one in a Ghost casing.
The good:
Cute desktop ornament for a casual player
Pretty much does as advertised in terms of answering questions
Is capable of standing as shown on the box
The plastic is fairly sturdy
The neutral/bad:
Should’ve come with a holster for it; if you bump it, it will topple
Needs an Echo device because it has no mic (and requires you to say Alexa/Echo rather than just Ghost)
Doesn’t have some sort of menu or access to change the WiFi connection without resetting it completely
Should’ve been colored to match the player’s Ghost in the game
Never should have been $80
Many of the other reviews are a huge exaggeration. Setup was simple. Its just like pairing many other smart devices around the house. My only complaint is that they advertise some 400 commands but they only give you like 8 examples and im yet to find a place that tells me what else I can do. Im just kinda trying things and seeing what cool responses I get. Its just kinda fun to mess with. I definitely wouldn't have paid $100 when it was brand new, but now $30 or less is a steal for a cool desk collectable that is interactive.
