Kuhn Rikon Easy-Clean Garlic Press, 7-Inch, Red

So disappointed, this broke after only 3 uses.

Update: the manufacturer sent me a new one. Comparing the two, I definitely received a fake initially, even though it was fulfilled by Amazon prime.

The real one does NOT have the Swiss flag on the front and DOES have ridges to keep the bar in place when crushing garlic. Comparison photos included.

I bought 3 of these. one to keep and two as gifts. After several years of using them, I’m coming back for a review. This is one of the few products that stands the test of time. After 5 years of using this product, it continues to look the same as the first day I received it, and it gets used at least once per week if not more.

One of the few products I’ve reviewed which is extremely solid. I tend not to review products within a few days of receiving, unless the product is faulty. I will not give a 5 stars after one month of use even if it’s a great product after a few weeks, and rather review after months of use. But this one I had forgotten to come back to it...and years later, it’s probably the best product I’ve purchased on Amazon that still works and looks the same as the day I bought it.

The other two were given as gift to my mom and mother in law since the product was so good. They also love it and would highly recommend.

I found this garlic press after watching the America’s Test kitchen series on best garlic press. I decided to try this one out I’ve always had the cheap die cast ones all my life which would end to be a cleaning chore on it’s own, and didn’t want to have to wash and bring out a cutting board just to chop garlic. This piece of kit is quite the kitchen tool. Its heavy in a good way, solid, and built to be cleaned and used quickly. The extruder area pops out for easy cleaning, with no leftover garlic pieces to get stuck. The design provides a tremendous amount of leverage with allows easy one handed extrusions of up to 2-3 cloves at a time. The pressed garlic is not too big or small- i press garlic straight into a pan of olive oil for the most amazing Aglio e Olio or press
Into a mixture of mayonnaise, anchovies, and lemon for excellent Caesar salad dressing.

There are reports of fake all around- luckily my version did not have a flag etched and came with tags- which seems to be the real deal as this is very high quality

I bought this for my mother's birthday, and the thing really does work like a charm. Incredible ease of use, you don't even need to peel the garlic and still get a ton out, and it's very easy to clean. I'm too afraid to put the thing in the dishwasher, even though it's stainless steel, but the way it opens up makes it very easy to hand wash. The garlic comes out in nice even little pieces and the flavor distributes well when cooking - this both saves time AND helps with your dish. Going to buy one for myself when I get some spare cash, I kind of bought it as an expensive gift for my mom, first, to test run it on someone else :)

I'm incredibly curious why there are so many negative reviews on here, but my guess is that a lot of people are getting counterfeits. Make sure you buy from a reliable seller, and compare it to videos to make sure you got an authentic one. The only real downside on this thing is the price, which, yes, is incredibly steep - but worth it, provided the other reviews (and my friend who sold me on the thing) are accurate about this thing being built to last through an apocalypse.

Seems quite well made. The stainless steel is thick and heavy duty. I can't tell if it's genuine or counterfeit. Hopefully Amazon sorted that all out. So far so good. The lever action makes it easier to use and the flip out grid makes it easier to clean. These 2 features are the primary reason why I bought it as the previous ones I've owned are more of a hassle to use. The tolerances are still a bit lacking. The gaps are not as narrow as I hoped making some of the garlic squeeze out the gap instead of through the grid. Overall I'm still impressed and will definitely use it more compared to simply chopping it. Also, as it's designed only for garlic I don't mind just rinsing it off rather than scrubbing it down with soap every time. I can also put it in the dishwasher without worrying about the finish wearing off. I'm glad I caught this on sale. Overall great buy.

Description

Kuhn Rikon, Easy-Clean Garlic Press 7" (red), Cooks' tools that combine fun and ingenious functionality. Clever, colorful and highly creative, just like you.

An OMG garlic press, so easy to clean, so sturdy, handles more than 1 clove at a time, alignment of handles/press plate makes for easy pressing without tons of pressure, and did I already say how easy it is to clean? Yes, cleaning ease means a lot to me.

ADDED:Use the press several times a week, I disagree that multiple cloves can't be pressed easily, including "flat" ones as have had no problem with either method of pressing. Flat works best when mixed in the pressing basket with a typical clove. Contrary to my thought that the outcome may also need to be chopped, this has not proven to be true. Another reviewer commented on the press being "over-engineered" but if smooth operation without having to use excessive upper body power is anything but great, I think it is nearly perfect.

It has larger press openings than my soon to be retired Zyliss jumbo garlic press so if very fine pressed garlic needed, may also need to chop.

Glad to add this to my prep tools.

Pro's: Designed well; Excellent grade steel; Presses peeled and unpeeled cloves, and ginger easily, and evenly; Yields almost 100% of flesh from cloves; Works with large hands & small hands; Does not pinch at all if used as with all kitchen tools, with some degree of mindfulness. The easiest press to clean we've ever used.

Con's: Price is a little high (but time will tell re' return on investment) ; Requires a tiny amount of learning, so Is not for those who prefer mindless automation in their kitchen tools; Will only accommodate approximately 1-2 cloves per press (but as I said this yields far better results and uses less garlic).

We have used garlic daily in our household for at least 20 years and have used, and broken, many presses. We have some other Kuhn Rikon kitchen gadgets and so when our last garlic press broke in half, we were hopeful that this brand would actually deliver. We always start by selecting the highest number of reviews, then reading the negative reviews on Amazon, then working back, so we were hopeful but skeptical. We need not have worried, as this is by far the best press on the market.

I personally do not understand any of the negative reviews on this one. It could be that they have a faulty unit and so need to replace it, or it could be that they just haven't explored a safe way to use it. After all it's a kitchen appliance and so needs to be applied with a certain amount of respect, otherwise, like anything, it might pinch or injure. As the axiom goes, a bad workman/woman quarrels with their tools.....

While I do sometimes use a large knife to crush and coarsely chop garlic cloves, I find the small uniform pieces from a garlic press are more ideal for certain dishes. I had a press that I'd been using for years until the hinge finally popped on it. Certainly, garlic presses can easily be found for $10-12; but I decided to do a bit of research to find one that would work well, clean easily, and be long lasting.

Besides the many glowing reviews on Amazon, I found that Cook's Illustrated highly endorsed this Kuhn Rikon Epicurean press. Also, the folks at America's Test Kitchens did an in-depth, hands-on comparison of various brands of garlic presses. After evaluating the presses for many variables such as precision, ease-of-use, cleaning, and durability, this Kuhn Rikon model was their top-rated. Their second-place choice (and voted the Best Buy) was the Trudeau Garlic Press.

I'm happy with the performance of this Epicurean garlic press so far. It's solidly constructed of stainless steel and feels comfortable and nicely heavy in my hand with a hinge system that works smoothly. It opens up easily with a hopper that flips out for even easier cleaning than most presses. It works with unpeeled as well as peeled; but I usually tend to peel my garlic cloves first to ensure that no pieces of papery garlic peel go into recipes. While I usually grate ginger root, I've found that this press works perfectly fine for crushing and mincing small pieces of ginger root, too.

The Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press is definitely a top-of-the-line product. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 or 4.5 rating rather than 5 stars is mainly because I'd expected it to have a MUCH easier squeeze than its competitors. It's marketed as such with references made to its unusual lever-action which is supposed to be far superior to the one-to-one action of most garlic presses. It is an easier squeeze; but, truthfully, I didn't notice that huge of a difference over my former $14 one.

Still, it is a very nice press which I expect to use for many years

If you cook with garlic regularly, and want to "rice" it with ease, this is the garlic press for you. Don't buy a knock-off! And don't be annoyed (as some here are) by having to use that spine/dull edge of a knife to clear the membrane between cloves. It'd happen with poorly designed presses, also. That is no reason to bag on this substantial hunk of steel. The design is lovely, and the materials and workmanship are uncommonly good for a "Made in China" product. It's a breeze to clean. And, perhaps most importantly, garlic stands no chance against the Kuhn Rikon Epicurean Garlic Press.

Best garlic press ever. I bought this after America's Test Kitchen recommended it (love them!) and I'm super happy with it. No, you don't have to peel the garlic and yes, it is super easy to clean. Was not cheap, granted, but I would have to say that mine came in perfect shape and is very sturdy, all metal, no plastic. I saw a few review that weren't great but I took a chance and am very glad that I did as it's a nice quality product that I've been using for a few months (hummus and pesto mainly) and I think it will last quite a few years.
