G&K Craft GKRET Retayne Color Fixative, 4-Ounce

I made a quilt with a lot of red fabric with a background of white. After it was completed, I had started reading among the quilting community about fabrics bleeding into white with disastrous results. I didn't want to wash it but my daughter was using it on a regular basis. When she brought it home from college smelling musty, I knew it had to get washed. I soaked it in a laundry tub with a two capfuls of Retayne and then washed it in my front loading machine. Not a single bleed! Now, I'm not sure if it was the high quality fabric I used or the Retayne but I was so pleased.

I recently had a near quilting disaster. I was in a hurry to make a baby quilt and didn't prewash the cotton material. The top was sky blue and white and I backed it with a beautiful maroon print. About half way through the quilting process, I noticed my fingers were a little red. I hoped it was hard work and not bleeding material but after soaking a scrap in a little soapy water, I couldn't deny that the red material was bleeding. I didn't have time to remake the quilt and I certainly didn't want the white on the top to turn pink since it was for a little boy. I searched solutions on the internet and decided to give Retayne a try. I ordered here on Amazon and was able to finish the quilting and binding by the time it arrived. I estimated the amount of material and put the proper amount of Retayne in a warm water wash with the finished quilt and said a few prayers. When all was said and done, the quilt came out of the dryer with no pink. The maroon backing was a bit faded, but I attribute that to the material being over dyed. I will never be without Retayne again and I will prewash all my quilting material with it.

I've also used this product on jeans. The blues and blacks seem to stay that way on the jean I've washed with Retayne when they were new. Others seem to fade a bit with each wash. I also used it on some shirts I bought online. Previous shirts from the same company, in different prints, faded badly the first time I washed them. The two new ones I bought in May are still bright after about a dozen washings. I simply washed them in warm water and Retayne when they first arrived and the color seems to be set. I highly recommend this product to other quilters in my area. The only drawback is that we can't find it locally.

If you're doing any kind of fabric dyeing, I would highly recommend getting a color fixative like this to prevent the dreaded "pink underwear" scared of fabric color bleeds. It's a simple process. All you have to do is take the dyed garment and soak it with the fixative in a HOT water bath. I would recommend this for anyone who self-dyes, especially with strong colors that tend to bleed/fade/transfer.

I purchased a neon pink shirt that I wore over the top of a white long-sleeve T, which quickly became a pink-ish long sleeve T just in the areas it came in contact with the neon shirt. ARGH! I looked around for suggestions to fix the neon shirt and came across this. It does what it promises. Once I treated the neon shirt, it no longer rubbed off on anything it touched. I've also used it on other brightly colored shirts that had unstable dyes (Ibiza Blue VS PINK Campus Crew shirts with the big dogs on back... I'm looking at you!) If you like brightly or deeply colored items and don't want to find out too late that they rub off, use this first. A little goes a long way.

Works brilliantly for artisanmade garments e.g. folkart in india!! absolute must buy..

Description

G&K CRAFT-Retayne Color Fixative. Retayne is a color fixative for commercially dyed cotton; linen and rayon fabrics that bleed. Use in the washing machine or treat by hand washing with hot water. Always test fabric before washing it for the first time. Only one application is necessary. You can treat 24 yards with one 4 ounce bottle. This package contains one 4ozbottle: enough for approximately 24yds of fabric. Contents conform to ASTM D4236. Made in USA.

Doesn't work on everything, but works excellently on many clothes. You can tell it, if after treatment, the water runs clear in the rinse where it was bleeding before. And one bottle does a lot. For example, it worked on all these, except the purple pair of pants marked with a check. So it doesn't work on every dye, but does work on many. Suprisingly well on the worst bleed offender - reds and pinks. I'm going to buy another bottle if I get new clothes.

Really makes quitting fabric maintain its color. After all that work sure don't want fabric to bleed onto the quilt pieces. I'm going to try it on brand new navy denim jeans to help retain the color.

A brightly colored dyed cotton dress faded badly in the wash. I had bought a second for myself and one for a friend. I wanted to fix the color right away. The Retayne seems to have worked well; I haven't noticed further fading of the dresses or other garments I've treated. I used the washing machine. If I only had one or two garments, I added others for a second treatment.

Worked well for my purpose. I have clothing from India that kept leaking color. Used this and saved myself so much work as I can now mix my Indian garments with my other washing.

I love this stuff! I collect vintage linens and this locks in the color in things I'm worried about bleeding.
