I got my oasis as a preorder after having used a paperwhite and a fire. By far, it's my favorite device. There are a few things to keep in mind: If you plan on taking this puppy where it might get wet, *you need to get the screen protector.* It makes sure the water doesn't register as a 'touch' on the screen.
Though I just reach over, grab the edge of my towel, and give the screen a handy swipe if I get it wet while reading in the tub. Also, reading in the tub.
Yeah. I've been doing that a lot lately.
In fact, I've never been so clean in my entire life, and I'm pretty sure my husband would like a chance to use the tub, too, but I'm really not sure I want to give up my bubble bath book reading time.
It works really well, page flip is fantastic, and it blows the fire and paperwhite out of the water.
It's expensive, but so far, it's worth its weight in gold for me.
So far, I haven't turned into a mermaid yet, but I'm working on it.
P.S.: I totally recommend turning off the bathroom light while reading, waiting for your partner to come home and head into the bathroom. Then you can scare them. (The backlight is really nice on this device.)
Received mine in South Africa in 4 days!!
Absolutely loving the 'Invert Black and White' function, much easier on the eyes.
I tried out the Text-to-Speech function and it's so good it's all I have used so far. The TTS works while the cover is closed. The voice is impressive, even does intonation for questions. I was listening and doing the housework and gardening: great multi-tasking. Makes a nice change from sitting at the computer and reading for 12 hours a day for my thesis!!! I used the TTS for about 8 hours yesterday and drained half the battery.
I bought the material cover for it and it makes it much easier to hold. The cover doesn't easily come off but it can, so would be nice to have a clip to fix it permanently at the back, but that is the only little critique.
Also glad I bought the 32GB version as there is only 27GB of free space available on the device.
The automatic brightness setting is also great.
I borrowed my friends entry level PaperWhite before and the battery was terrible with no lights, but this is the Rolls-Royce!!! The screen is nice and big with better clarity (pixels), the page buttons are much better than tapping the screen while reading and the TTS sounds like an audible book and the lights are worth having.
For me, the best features are the black and white inversion and the TTS.
After 10 years of reading my DX every night, I thought to explore the new ones. My DX works like new, but the software that made it work was clutzy. The Oasis intrigued me and it was about what I had paid for my DX. Had to be better, right? Well, yes and no. I was going from a 9 inch screen to a 7 inch. This was the biggest Amazon made, and when I used the Oasis, I found I didn't miss the larger screen. It was lighter and the lighting was very good and could be dimmed. All good. The manual in the Oasis was hard for me to figure out (80 year old eyes), however, I found that when I downloaded the manual into my laptop, it was much easier to use. I could download my books from Amazon with no problem, but my Collections didn't get downloaded. I have tried repeatedly to download them, but they are not there, I think. Since I have about 60+ books in these collections, it was important to me. I think the individual books were downloaded, but I would have to redo them. I also reread books and they were almost all in the collections, not happy. This was a 10 year accumulation and I couldn't remember all of the titles.
It took me some time to realize the way Wi-Fi was turned off was to go to the Airplane Mode. Could have been clearer in the instructions. Much clearer on my DX.
I am still learning how to use the menu's. They obviously evolved through the various iterations of the Kindle, but I was moving from one of the original Kindles so my learning curve was greater.
Pros: lighter, brighter. quicker, more storage, well-made and adjustable page back-lighting
Cons: manual, smaller page turn buttons and down-loading of my library
Am I glad I bought it? Yes
Would I recommend it? Yes
This is the 4th Kindle I have bought since they came out and, except for the battery life (much less than the Paperwhite), it is my favorite. The reading area is bigger and I like to use the buttons to turn the page, instead of "swiping", but if I am reading it a lot I have to charge it every day or so, unlike the claimed "weeks and months" in the Amazon advertisments.
If they improved the battery life and made a cover that actually stays on, I would give it 5 stars.
The kindle itself is great. But I am not in the least pleased with the life span of the battery. Before purchasing this product I read a lot of reviews and the description saying how long the battery lasted. That was one of the turn ones for me. I received my plug a week after I recievied the kindle because god forbid at the small price of $300 dollars they could just include it. Anyways, I’ve literally had to charge everyday. I’d say I get about 7hrs out of it if I use it all day. Other than that it’s great. Maybe to make it last a week or month like they say, your only supposed to read a paragraph or two a day. 😂

This is my first e-reader. I originally wanted the kobo but convenient shipping swayed me to buy this kindle instead. I really love reading and initially thought I didn't need or want an e- reader but now that I own one, I dunno why I waited so long to get it. Yes, nothing can replace a real book; the smell, the texture of paper, the contentment of seeing your library.. but when I thought about it, the real reason for buying a book was the content. Plus points if it had a beautiful cover and was hardbound. Anyway, reading on my ipad and phone was totally wrecking my eyesight so for me, this was totally worth it. Plus points for being lightweight, kindle books that are cheaper than print, eco friendly and free from distractions. Will update this post once I figure out exact battery life span and stuff or if I notice something else.
I love this reader so far. Text and images are amazingly crisp and the device is very comfortable to hold. Accelerometer quickly flips the page orientation when you flip the device around which is nice. It's worth paying the extra $20 to remove ads in my opinion, as the screensaver images are beautiful and definitely add to the overall appeal of the device.
I have had my Oasis for a bit more than a year now. First the good news: This unit is easy to use for downloading and reading, even in bright sunlight. I keep mine well-stored, so I cannot speak to its durability. You can transfer other document types to it, so any PDFs you have you can read on your device. In short, it does everything you would expect the latest Kindle device to do, and it does it well. Deleting items from your Amazon library requires a computer and logging onto your Amazon account, but it can be done.
Now the bad news: Amazon apparently has or had problems with the manufacture of this device when it was new. I bought one when they were just released. My first unit took a charge, but three months after receiving it and downloading quite a few eBooks, I took my first airplane flight (which was the primary reason for buying the unit). I "charged" it the day before, but when I attempted to turn it on in the airport, it was completely dead. No matter what was tried, the unit just would not take a charge.
The first unit was returned for replacement. The replacement was obviously a "refurbished" (meaning someone else had returned this brand-new unit already; remember, I bought when they were first released); it came already set up for Spanish, which wasn't a real problem, but indicative of the fact that it had been used and returned. The problem was that even though this unit charged up, the battery would die within just a couple of days. I plugged it in for 24 hours to 100% charge, closed the unit to turn it "off," and opened it 24 hours later. It showed 89% charge. I closed it and about 24 hours later, opened it again, and it was down to less than 80% charge. I called Amazon, who was reluctant to send me another unit, but while on the phone with them for about 20 minutes and the unit open in front of me not even turning pages, just sitting there, it dropped about 5% more battery. They reluctantly agreed to send me a replacement for my replacement, but I had to escalate my problem to the second tier to get this done. The original agent denied my second request, as if I had been doing something wrong with the unit. Come on! All you do is charge, read, and download on this thing. What is there I could be doing wrong?
The third time was the charm. My new (now over a year old) Oasis works exactly as expected. The battery life is still impressive, and I've had zero issues with this unit. It is the ad-free, 32GB, non-cellular model. The file system set up is cumbersome and not very good for organizing a large number of books. You can only view by title, author, or by collection. So, let's say you have a large number of books. You either end up with an extremely long list of books or an almost as long list of collections. At only 7 or 8 per page, you might have dozens of pages to look through to find your book. Amazon needs to change their interface to allow nested collections (collections inside collections). You could have "classics" and inside that "Dickens," "Poe," Sir AC Doyly," etc. My computer book collection alone is probably 10 pages inside the collection. Why not allow me to put Javascript by itself?
Lastly, there are hundreds of free books on Amazon, and you can purchase thousands more for less than $1. The latest titles from the most well-known authors are a bit pricier, but you should be able to get almost anything you need for less than a few dollars. I have given the unit a four-star rating; half a star lost for the extra return and half a star lost for the poor interface. The functionality and ability to do what you paid for it to do got it the well-deserved four-star rating.
Very sleek and light weight easy to use better screen size than the Kindle Paper White allowing for main menu to show entire book titles as well as being able to display book list in a larger format. How ever I think $200 to $250 Would be a better pricing as you dont get 3 times the book or feactures.
But I do like it and as I read about 300 novels a year to me it is worth the money but if you only read a few books a month then the Paper White will be all you ever need.
Very happy with the Kindle Oasis and with Amazons customer service who provided a great after sales service. Super fast delivery too, received it within 5 days and I live in Thailand. A little pricey but glad I made the upgrade from the Paperwhite, I find the new Oasis to be a much better reading experience and like pretty much everything about it. The build quality is solid and the bigger screen makes reading more enjoyable, it's flush with the aluminium edging, txt is nice and sharp and the even lighting ensures a crisp display. I prefer Kindle to tablets/ipads, or reading on the phone as they're easier on the eyes, better battery life and distraction free and in my humble opinion, this one is the best to date. Hope this helps.
