After living in tiny apartments in Hawaii for 5 years while I was a bachelor in the Navy, and having to hand wash all my dishes, I moved into a small house that didn't have a dishwasher and I said "No more!". If you have a habit of eating out because of the inconvenience of having to hand wash all your dishes, like any dishwasher, this will rather quickly wind up paying for itself several times over - granted, that could be said of any dishwasher. So, specifically about this one:
One of the things a lot of people criticize in the reviews here is that the shortest setting is 10 minutes for a freshwater rinse, or for a regular wash cycle you can use the 45 minute cycle - many seem to complain that there isn't a mid-length cycle in between these. Well, it's true that some dishwashers have one, but generally speaking, most don't and take somewhere between 30-60 minutes to wash a load. I think there is a tendency to think that because the unit is compact and does smaller loads, that it might inherently do them faster - I understand where this presumption comes from, but if you think about it, that really doesn't make sense and it's actually normal and acceptable that the unit takes just as long as any other basic model dishwasher for a full and proper wash cycle. I'm not trying to criticize people for wanting a shorter cycle, I'm just saying, for those of you considering buying a mini-dish washer, it would be wise to adjust your expectations accordingly - they're generally smaller, but that doesn't mean faster.
It does internally heat the water which really helps dissolve the soap and wash away greasy dishes. I haven't actually used the longer wash cycles (70 minutes, and 1hr 45 minutes I think?) because I always just soak my pots and pans in the sink anyway - but normal dishes as clean as could be on the shorter, 45 minute wash cycle. I just give things a quick rinse before I put them in there, but I don't pre soak normal dishes or anything, and they always come out perfect, peanut butter, pasta sauce, wine, tea, coffee - everything comes out sparkling. I even use only half the detergent recommended, Costco dish-washing powder, (it's my habit to minimize, reduce, and conserve), but everything always comes out great anyway. I have high mineral well-water, so doing a load daily, I add a half cup of white vinegar to the start of a cycle once a week to keep the nice steel interior clean and looking new.
The clearance between the wash arm at the bottom and the rack is a little smaller than full sized dishwashers, I've found it wise to bump it with my finger to make sure it doesn't strike any dishes sticking down below the rack before I start it up to wash a load - just as one might with any other dishwasher.
The good:
-Not noisy, operates and a comfortable 'medium-quiet' volume. i.e. it's not near-silent like a $2000 stainless steel European dishwasher, but it also doesn't roar disruptively. I'm in college and study in the room next to the open kitchen while it's running, so if that's any indicator?
-It's stainless steel inside, which I thought was a nice touch of quality, especially for an affordable, compact model.
-It's smaller and does smaller loads (which is the purpose, right?) but all around, I don't find that one has to sacrifice anything for the convenience of having this compact model. Same sound, same wash, same soap, smaller size - that's it.
The bad:
My only "complaint" is that if you disconnect the hose while it's washing in order to use your kitchen faucet for something real quick, and then reconnect it and forget to turn the water back on, the dishwasher will beep and show an "E1" error on the display when it tries to do it's next rinse, but it won't resume washing if you hear the beep and then turn the water on - rather, you'll get the beep, the "E1" error message (which means no water pressure), and then have to reset the 45 minute wash cycle back to the beginning and start over. This is being very nit-picky, and I'm not really trying to make a complaint out of it, as generally, I start it before I go to bed so I've only caused this interruption twice and it really didn't inconvenience me when it happened anyway. I'm really not actually mentioning it to "complain" about it, but it seemed relevant to mention for you all to set your expectations accordingly, since that's what reviews of good products are really for (my opinion). With that, I am content to give it 5 stars and think that overall, you'll enjoy and appreciate this thing - I've genuinely been very happy with it across the board.
I hope this helps. :)
I'm an idiot ! I've been building a house by myself for over 9 years, living in the lower level in rough comfort with a gourmet stove and fridge with single basin sink BUT NO dishwasher!. It seems like I race myself to use EVERY dish, glass, mug, plate and utensil ...(even convincing myself that the alcoholic drink bar mixing spoons qualified as Cheerios breakfast spoons when there weren't any others clean to use!) And I catch myself doing the REALLY desperate thing by washing the "cleanest" cereal bowl and spoon I can find at 6:30am just to get my cereal fix before you leave for work!!!! RIGHT? Now, I KNOW YOU know what I'm talking about!!!
It's pathetic, I'm so good with caring for and putting my power and hand tools away when I'm done with them, but ever since I was a little kid I remember screaming matches with my mom because I HATED doing dishes!
It has become a joke when I tell my friends that I have to "SHOVEL the dishes tonight" . SO about a week ago I had had enough. One night I plunked in "Portable Dishwashers" and up popped this little surprise. I'd never seen a dwarf dishwasher before and though intrigued, I wasn't convinced it was worthwhile until I read the FIRST PATHETIC PERSONS REVIEW!! LOL! I gotta tell ya, I spent days reading all the reviews ... BELLY laughing out loud that there are actually other "closet" pitiful people out there JUST LIKE ME! They have all paid the ultimate price by probably spending the days trying to motivate themselves, all mostly in denial. THEN LIKE ME, they knuckle under out of desperation mind you, and finally carve out the 3 hours of time (time for me I'd rather spend working on my house)... to stand in front of that damn sink: sorting ....rinsing...and organizing dirty dishes EVEN BEFORE I can start to WASH them by hand.
I'm here to tell you that I have been counting the hours for this machine to arrive. I've watched the tracking diligently and today was the day and I watched FedEx drive into the driveway! And, I t was just in time, because I was down to one plate and one glass! So I was ready to put it to the test.
No visible shipping damage before unpacking... Great..That's a good start for such a miserably sized cumbersome box with NO handle knock outs on the protective outer box for the FedEx dudes and dudettes to help muscle it with. I actually watched him roll this off his van's step and push it onto the ground it's so hard for them to manage... BUT it survived that test. CHECK!
It certainly was packed well and i didn't see any internal packaging damage. I really appreciated all the use of the very inventive use of cardboard packing that can be recycled, that keeps it safe in transit. KUDOS! BUT...uh oh...there's a sheet metal ding on the back vertical 90 degree edge some 6" above the drain. The impact not only wrinkled the sheet metal but pushed it far enough that the back panel got wrinkled too!... BUT THIS VISUAL DAMAGE ISN'T STOPPING ME! This baby's got work to do!. Clearly this damage happened at the factory, SO HEY... EDGESTAR... jack your QC people up!
Onward, easy to unpack, faucet adaptor even fits my fancy faucet, good instructions, easy to set up ..CHECK CHECK CHECK! Something MUST be wrong with this thing, right? Well I ran the 10 minute rinse watching it closely drinking a ceremonial beer, thinking it was going to sound like a DC-10 taxiing to the runway...or leak like a sive. But I was amazed! So I ran to the store and bought my favorite dishwasher products (you see I DO remember what it was like owning a dishwasher almost a DECADE ago!!) ...loaded it up for the first time, using the gel style cascade and jet-dry... Turned it on ...and I've got 15 minutes left on the first run for this little beauty! I am overwhelmed. Next to tears actually, that I didn't get on it and buy this baby years ago!
When I do move to the upstairs of my home and bring all my appliances up into the new kitchen, this fabulous midget machine is going to keep on working as the dishwasher right where it is for the lobby/bar for my theater room.
Yes it looks nice, not stainless on the outside, but it is very acceptable. In the next weeks after I'm 100% convinced it's not just a dream, I'm going to permanently install it by the sink.
Wow, if you are a single person no matter what age, busy with life ...and HATE doing dishes, AND you are sitting on the fence thinking you don't need a dishwasher... THIS DISHWASHER... You are wrong! And now, I even have time to sit town and type out why you're wrong!
I hope this thing lasts and lasts and lasts!
OH... ITS BEEPING! Only 2-3 more loads to go to get caught up tonight and then I bet I won't need to run it but twice a week if that! Gotta go! I'll let you know how the permanent installation goes. What a relief I'm feeling. It's going to lower my STRESS level enormously! Well worth the money just for that!
This dishwasher is just what we needed for our kitchen since there was no place to install an under the counter model. I went a step further by eliminating the drain hose hookup and making mine permanent on the countertop by drilling a 1" diameter hole through the countertop behind the dishwasher and running the supply water and drain hose direct to the hot water connection at my sink and to my drain connection respectively. This arrangement eliminates the hose flipping and frees up my kitchen sink for other uses. It works great for me and I'm satisfied with how it works. This model is very quiet and very efficient with water usage and dishes come out clean even on the light setting. In fact it is so quiet I had to check it several times when I first got it hooked up permanently to make sure it was running and of course it was. Couldn't have asked for a better dishwasher. It is great!
Thrilled.. So far! I was concerned about the adapter working with my pull-down faucet head but once removing the aerator from the center of the faucet head, the faucet adapter fit perfectly. No leaks anywhere and my first load came out perfectly!
Update! 7 months later and this sweet little guy is still going strong. I have a family of 5 and I run it at least once a day. (Sometimes I give it a little hug when I walk by!) Very quiet, cleans everything very well! No problems! Yes, I would buy this again! And again!
Update! 2 years later!!? I can't believe it's been 2 years! But this little gem is still working its magic! I still use it almost every day .. sometimes twice a day! Still quiet, has never leaked and cleans just as well as it did the first day. (Hallelujah for never having to wash silverware again!)
This dishwasher does a great job most of the time, and it's definitely better than washing dishes by hand.
I have had zero mechanical issues with it, and I wouldn't trade it for anything except a regular dishwasher.
There are some things to consider if you are looking at buying one.
First of all, these do NOT work as well as a regular home dishwasher.
It doesn't have jets spraying water from above, the motor pumping the water isn't as powerful as a regular dishwasher, it has no sanitizing setting, and it isn't vented to aid in drying dishes.
This means that dried on, or baked on food may need an occasional scrub by hand, more so than a regular dishwasher This is especially true if you have a full load. But normally all I do is give dishes a quick rinse under the faucet before they go in the dishwasher.
The dishwasher is not tall enough to handle my stock pot, but that is pretty tall. Regular pots will fit just fine. It's large enough to wash the removable oval crock from my crock pot if I leave out the utensil holder and limit the number of dishes I wash with it.
Many cups, glasses, and mugs will not fit on the upper row of the dishwasher.
Longer knives have to be washed by arranging them between regular dishes.
Even though the unit can handle six plates, you aren't going to be able to wash all the dishes, pots, knives, etc.. for a meal for six in one load.
A good sized meal for six will take two or more loads. The size is much better suited for single people or a couple, but multiple loads are still better than washing dishes by hand.
If you use too much detergent, it will leave a film on your dishes. So for a really full or dirty load where I use more detergent, I pour in some cleaning strength vinegar during the first rinse cycle.
If you crack the door open right after the wash completes, the dishes will dry nicely before you have to put them away.

Description
6 Place Setting Countertop Portable Dishwasher
4.5 stars.
This dishwasher has saved my life. I bought this one after having two different SPT dishwashers flood my kitchen after a few weeks' use. I've had it just under two months and couldn't be more pleased.
You can't actually fit six full place settings in it unless you have fairly shallow bowls and small water glasses, but we can usually get 6 dinner plates, 6 saucers, 6 tall glasses, 4-6 over-sized coffee mugs OR 4 cereal bowls, and a 12-piece silverware set in it, along with 2-4 assorted cooking utensils. It cleans very well; I'm not at all meticulous about pre-rinsing dishes and I use generic liquid dishwasher detergent and the dishes are always spotless. You absolutely HAVE to use rinse aid, though, otherwise the dishes don't dry and you do get water spots.
The combo wash cycle takes 85 minutes, and it has a countdown timer to let you know how much time is left. It also beeps when it's done, and beeps if you leave the door open without turning the power off. We have to run it pretty much every day, but it uses less water than washing by hand, not to mention giving me that time to do other things.
The only issues I've had is that it makes an alarming whining/grinding sound during the wash cycle occasionally and the silverware basket is annoyingly constructed with two differently-sized holes such that dinner forks/soup spoons only fit in half of them; I took off half a star for that. But otherwise, it's a great appliance for one or two people.
I am kicking myself for not buying this awesome dishwasher sooner. My husband and I purchased a small older home with a tiny kitchen and no dishwasher 2.5 years ago, and I really thought I could keep up with hand washing dishes from only 2 people. Well, add a baby (now toddler), two full time jobs, and full time graduate school and we were DROWNING in dirty dishes that nobody wanted to take 2+ hours to wash whenever we finally had time to do them all. Sure, this takes up counter space, but we put this where the (unused) dish drying rack sat and voila! My sanity has been preserved! No more disgusting dishes piled up in the sink, no more dirty dishes sitting on what little counter space we have, and best of all, no more fighting about who has to do the dishes next! Seriously, I LOOK FORWARD to "doing" the dishes now. This holds quite a bit for it's compact size, plus it's quiet and cleans very well. And we should know, the first time we used it we needed to do 4 separate loads from the entire past week and they all came out sparkling clean. Now I can load up the day's dishes after supper in a matter of minutes, attach the hose to the water faucet, and I have clean dishes without standing at the sink for hours! It feels like magic! Is this Hogwarts?! But seriously... BUY THIS DISHWASHER. You will not regret it!
I expect part of the reason I give this product five stars is because I hate washing dishes so much and am so relieved not to feel irritated with my sweetie when he doesn't do his share. Sure, there are trivial annoying things about this machine, i.e. the tine lay out in the dishwasher rack could be better, the shortest wash cycle is 45 min., and there is no mechanism to tuck the hose away in the back (though you can coil it). You will periodically want to re-tighten/check the hoses in the back of the machine; ours loosened once due to coiling the hose and it started leaking a bit, though it was nothing dramatic. Also, it is sort of a big hulking machine that takes up a chunk of space not very prettily (you will definitely want to measure before ordering); the exterior is a silvery plastic *not* stainless steel (a little cheap looking). However, I love everything else about this machine. It does exactly what it's supposed to. It washes dishes. It sterilizes them. Plus, it's not too loud, it hooks up easily to my sink, it is simple to operate, and uses very little water/energy. It fits more dishes than I expected. We are a two person household, and he works from home. In two days we generate just a few more dishes than it has capacity for, so I'm running it every day about 2/3 full, while hand-washing pots and pans. We just scrape the dishes and put them right in without rinsing first (for the most part), and I've found the "everyday cycle" (85 min.) to get the dishes perfectly clean. Just so you know, it *just* fits our 10 1/2 inch dinner plates, we have to squeeze them through; it certainly will not fit anything taller! Also, if you need to use the tap while it's washing you can easily pause the cycle between water intake/draining, unhook, re-hook, and restart. Or, for a quick rinse, just use the water pressure release button with the tap on. The display shows exactly how much time is left in the cycle. When it's done washing it beeps about four times, not too loudly, and then sits quietly until you turn it off and disconnect it (which is why I didn't go with another model that apparently would beep every five minutes once it was done; I abhor beeping). Like everyone says, it doesn't have a true dry cycle (few counter top dishwashers do), and just cracking it open while the dishes are still warm let's them air dry fine. For those who are wondering what that 3 in 1 cycle is for, that's just if you want to use those detergent gel packs. We don't, and it still works great, though I did invest in some Jetdry since everyone else said it made a difference. Frankly, I can't tell, but I don't pay close attention. All in all, I am very satisfied and pleased with my purchase!
This Countertop dishwasher is the perfect size for a couple or an apartment dweller. While it won't take huge pans like a built-in dishwasher that is not really the purpose now is it? This has been convenient, easy to use, with several cycle choices. Remember to clean the food trap under the slide out rack occasionally to prevent clogging and avoid odors and you should have years of carefree dishwashing. The removable silverware compartment even has removable lids in case you want to wash small parts which would otherwise get lost, just close the lid on the compartment. Liquid detergent goes into a pre-measured flip open dispenser in the door just like a built-in, Rinsing agent also sits in a compartment in the door. I enjoy the stainless steel exterior on mine, although other color options are available. This is the third year of using mine with zero problems.
this washes dishes clean....it is very quiet.....the silverware holder is a little difficult but will work when put in the right place...the knobs at the top are not very clear but I just leave it on 150 and let it wash. the upper cup holder is not adequate for much glassware..too little height
the only thing I am unhappy with is the quik connector quickly connects but does not have an aerator attached to it and water spills and splashes over the sink and dishes while using it for ordinary washing. I am going to inquire whether there is another connector that provides both. It would be worth spending a little more on
Having said all this, it is a pleasure every day to use it!!!. I keep testing pots and pans and they are always sparkling clean!!!
