Avanti 12 Bottle Thermoelectric Counter Top Wine Cooler - Model EWC1201

Purchased this unit to replace my aging Haier on which I'd replaced the thermoelectric module in several times. Avanti makes very good products, nonetheless - when I plugged it in, I was unable to change any of the parameters (temp, wine type) on the display. No problem, a quick fix for anyone that this happens to: the top hinge has a black plastic cover. Take it off and you'll see 4 wires feeding into a black connector. Unplug the connector - doing so with the power on is OK because of the small voltage present which you cannot contact anyway because the connections are protected inside of the connector - and plug it back in. After that, snap the hinge cover back on; anyone can do this! A small "inconvenience" to make your unit function again and, it's no big deal! Sure beats having to ship it back for a replacement.
I also found out that the buttons are always locked out until you press both of the 'temp up' and 'temp down' buttons together - overlooked that in the manual.
It's June 2015 and the cabinet has performed flawlessly. VERY pleased with it especially the 4-bottle stand-up area. Finally figured that out; as you open bottles and reseal with your vacu-vin or what have you, it doesn't make sense to lay them back down, they're not going to "breathe" through those seals so, stand 'em up and they'll be ready when you are for your next glass! Neat idea?
July 12, 2016 Update - As I passed the cooler today, I noticed that the temperature displayed was 58 degrees (set on 55,) no fans running and no action from the buttons. Unplugged, left unpowered for a minute then restored power; now all is right again. Hope this was a power grid fluke, either a dip or spike. Still loving this little cooler!

I recently purchased this (12-17) after researching all of the comparable coolers. Upon setting up it took a few hours to reach temperature, I set it for white wine because I like my reds a bit cooler then 54 degrees. Cooler is very quiet hardly noticing when it is running. The control panel works well, just touch temp settings for three seconds and it unlocks the panel to either reset the temp or turn on the interior light. Holds four bottles upright for taller bottles and eight lie flat for std 750ml bottles. Overall appears to be well constructed. Shipping took about 5 days. I also purchased the 3 year warranty, I don't normally but decided the $10.00 would be worth it.

So far so good and I would recommend this cooler.

Pros:
-shows both desired temp when set and actual temp
-convenient to set a white or red temp
-quiet when properly vented or in comparison to a compressor drive fridge
-on/off button for light
-conveniently position vertical or horizontal placement of wines
-recommended settings for red, white or rose wines ideal
-auto shutoff of light

Cons:
-unlock required to operate on/off of light
-'bridge' needed to fit in oversized bottles in vertical position so they don't 'tip'
-more uniform spacing to accommodate sizes (some are squeezed into areas where others fit with room$
-racks to accommodate tapered bottles (traditional French bottles are in a more tapered bottle than straight walled American winery bottles)

Overall, a great countertop chiller for a mix of wines. To accommodate all types (red, white and rose) chill wines at 52-53F.

Recommend for the average wine consumer if looking for a countertop chiller.

We love this wine cooler. Had an 8 bottle countertop model that took up too much space. Not sure why this is called a countertop because it's too tall to fit under my cabinets & I always intended to sit it on the floor right next to my cabinets. it fits perfectly there. the best feature is the upright section where you can put open bottles instead of getting them too cold in the fridge. I don't think the fan is too noisy. I have pretty sensitive hearing and I can usually tell when it runs but then it becomes just a little white noise. we live in a hot climate and so far it is keeping our reds at 56 right where I set it. it's also very nice looking. I would definitely recommend.

Hi, I like it but I also have a tip and question for all of you.
It's been working fine for over a year now, and is very quiet.
Tip: break out the metal retainer on the lower 'standing vertical' section to fit any size bottle like the larger Champagne bottles.
Question: Mine smells of production plastic when I open it. I've soaped it clean. I've not seen any leftover shipping materials or plastic over the light bulbs that I imagine would produce that smell. Does anyone else have this problem or more importantly a solution for me? I would buy another one if I could solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

Avanti EWC1201 Twelve Bottle Counter Top Wine Cooler

I bought this for my father as a gift and he loves it. He recently moved to Northern California (without AC) so the temperature indoors can fluctuate and sometimes get as warm as 85-90 degrees (F). He was keeping his wine on a wine rack at room temperature, so he was regularly drinking wine that wasn't chilled at all. Putting your wine in fridge chills it far too cool. This has made a huge difference. He absolutely loves it - it keeps the wine a perfect temperature for him (you can set it to whatever temperature you prefer). It also is completely silent and it looks great. It is small enough to fit perfectly next to the counters in the kitchen and look really nice, but it holds plenty of wine for him to enjoy regularly with dinner. He is very knowledgeable about wine, so I trust his opinion when he says that this is a great solution.

It may be too early to write this review and I'll update it if necessary down the road. For now I am extremely pleased with this unit. It is beyond quite. You can't even tell that it's on except for the temp light. The majority of my wines are reds, so I have it set on 57. I am using the stand up space for extra unopened bottles turned upside down and fitted into that space. I usually have no more than two bottles opened at any time and don't want to waste any space. Some of the bottles fit tightly; others a re narrower and fit perfectly. The reason I took off one star is because I don't think you should have to press the up and down arrows simultaneously every time you want the interior light to come on. But you do have to unlock it each time you want to use that simple function.

Very attractive unit. No noise at all. Have 12 bottles in it right now and they are staying cool. Excellent value. Hope it works for a long time.

After our kitchen remodel, we had some space under the counter so decided to get this as my wife loves wine. This is very quiet and keeps the temperature at a constant level based on where you set it. Being able to store a bottle upright is a nice feature!

Here are a couple of things to consider though:
1) If there's a power outage, the unit will reset to the default temperature, not the temperature you have it set to, if different from the default.
2) Be sure to allow enough clearance around the wine refrigerator. If you get it too close on any of the sides (left, right, back or top), it will struggle to cool down
3) It doesn't take long for it to get warmer if the door is open, and it warms up much faster than it cools down

All in all, though, it's a really nice appliance and does exactly what it is intended to do.

My product arrived, undamaged, no dents in the box, no broken glass, and absolutely perfect. I first tried to squeeze this into a small corner which I thought would be perfect in the kitchen...wrong! The manual states to give it 5" of breathing room around the sides and boy are they not joking. Your cooler will not be able to go sub 61 degrees if you don't give it breathing room. Upon moving it to another place, the temperature immediately started dropping and my fridge thermometer was reporting the same. The fan is not loud as other reviewers state. The noise it produces is half (probably more) of what a refrigerator generates. I have it fairly close to my couch and unless your place is whisper quiet, you will not notice it. It will be like white noise in the background. The heat from my radiator is louder than the whisper this produces. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for something tiny yet holds a good amount of wine.

03-12-2014 Edit:
Now that I've had the wine cooler for a couple of months and have it fully stocked, I have noticed the temperature gauge being off as previous reviewers state. In order to have my cooler be at a constant 55 degrees, I need to set it to 48. I would highly recommend purchasing a refrigerator thermometer to hang off of one of the shelves.

Taylor Digital Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer

Other than the manual offset for the temperature, the product still works beautifully and isn't an energy hog. The energy saving capabilities keeps this at a four star, instead of a three.

Not 48F: Thermometer not synced. After a week of keeping track of high and low internal temp with a thermometer, range is 50-52f given we have heat wave of 110F+ in SoCal. My ambient temp for the room was 75F-81F per room thermometer.

All is good for consistency BUT the fridge built-in thermometer says steady 48F. Not sure how to fix that.

Note: if you open and close it often every time you do that, it will go up a few degrees. My 50-52f was achieved without opening it.

Otherwise it was 50-61F after I opened it to get a bottle out. Took 3 hours to bring it back down to 50F.

Also internal humidity is steady 40-41% with 3 little packs of desiccant I got from other purchases. Looking for more to put inside the fridge to lower the Humidity.
