This fabric was perfect as a cheap fitting fabric for my projects. The only disappointment is that after only 2 weeks or so after buying 6 yards at $2.80/yard, the price changed considerably, to over $4/yard. So as much as I was happy to get the deal, I’ll probably be looking elsewhere for a similar fitting fabric.
A few summers ago, my cousins and I embarked on turning a canoe that we inherited into a sailboat. After many planks of lumber, we were nearing the end of completion, the painting stage. We had, of course, realized we needed a sailcloth in order to propel our clunky machine made of douglas fir.
Now, fabric designed specifically for sailing is expensive. Like, what are we, made out of carbon fiber or something? I planned on making the sails out of poly-cotton, which was convenient, being the cheapest option for fabric I could find. Ordered this stuff in green and white, and cut some sails. I figured, we could easily make up the lost speed due to DIY material by adding more sail area to our mast. It actually worked. These things are light, durable enough to withstand our boat with 4 people on board. The mast is nearly 20 feet tall. Any more than that and we would have had to have sewn some rip-stop wires into them. But we didn't, and no ripping after 2 years(though, light usage).
Some science: Now, the reason this material works so well is because it breathes, but not too much. Have you ever wondered why some parachutes have holes in them? Well this is because the fabric has to breathe, or you aren't capturing air as you fall through it. Those holed parachutes don't breathe, and if they didn't have a hole in them, those poor folks would plummet to the earth! The breathing of a sail works well when you are running with the wind, because you need to capture it without creating an air bubble that stops it from gathering more. When you are running sideways or close towards the wind(called reaching and close hauling respectively), it works better when you have sails that don't breathe, due to aerodynamic lift(like airplanes!). This fabric happens to be a very good compromise. Hope you all learned something interesting today!
In conclusion, if you are making anything less than a 1/8 TONNE sailboat, give this a run for your money!
The fabric is great for what I'm sewing. I wasn't crazy about the dirty finger smudges on the fabric but I'm hoping they will washout o.k. I'm making
under clothes for 1600 era costume so it should be alright. Price was right.
Love my egg dash. Greatest little invention. I eat a lot of hard boiled eggs on Keto diet. Always had a problem peeling shells off.
NOT ANYMORE! Shells peel off like a dream, whether right after or days later from fridge. You will mot be disappointed with The Dash! .
Exactly what I wanted. Excellent quality, pure white, no blemishes, has a nice clean selvage.
